Job summary

First Recruitment Group is seeking a Senior Mechanical Services Engineer to support major infrastructure upgrades within a regulated defence and nuclear environment. You will lead multidisciplinary design packages from concept through to handover, ensuring delivery to safety, quality, schedule and cost targets.

The role offers remote work with two days per month in Plymouth. You will mentor junior engineers, review calculations and manage design activities across the project lifecycle,

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• Experience delivering mechanical systems design in regulated industries (Nuclear/Defence/Marine/Heavy industry).
• Proven ability to manage complex engineering packages through full lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design work packages from concept to handover.

Job Title: Senior Mechanical Services Engineer

Location: Remote (2 days/month in Plymouth)
Contract: 12 Months (Ongoing)
Rate: Negotiable DOE
Clearance: BPSS to start. Must be eligible for SC Clearance (British nationals only).

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Services Engineer to support the delivery of major infrastructure upgrades within a highly regulated defence and nuclear environment. You will lead multidisciplinary design packages from concept through to handover, ensuring delivery to the required safety, quality, schedule and cost targets.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver mechanical design work packages, acting as the technical focal point and Responsible Engineer.
• Review and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
• Manage design activities, programme delivery, risks, issues and change control.
• Lead design reviews, HAZIDs, ALARP assessments and CDM activities.
• Ensure compliance with project standards, quality processes and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers and stakeholders.
• Support FAT/SAT activities, commissioning and handover documentation.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across the team.

Requirements

• Degree–qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong experience delivering mechanical systems design, ideally involving fluid, hydraulic, pneumatic or piping systems.
• Experience within regulated industries such as Nuclear, Defence, Marine or Heavy Industrial projects.
• Proven ability to manage complex engineering packages through the full project lifecycle.
• Knowledge of CDM, HAZID, ALARP and engineering safety processes.
• Experience reviewing engineering calculations, drawings and technical specifications.
• Strong stakeholder management, planning and reporting skills.
• Proficient with CAD and engineering/document management systems.

Desirable

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional registration.
• Experience supporting submarine, naval or nuclear infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with BIM, CDE, Vault and related engineering systems.
