Job description

Our Client, is a specialist for intelligent drive technology and systems. Their customers are in diverse industries such as oil and gas, energy, mining, ship technology, rail and commercial vehicles. They are looking to employ on a full-time permanent basis a Senior Mechanical Engineer focusing on the Commercial Vehicle sector of their business. This role is based on the Client’s site in Croydon.

In a nutshell, the ideal candidate will have their own engineering tasks, and typically this role will manage tasks of the Engineering team and review the outputs from the engineering team, prior to approval by the Head of Engineering.

Senior Mechanical Engineer – The Offer

1. £60k to £70k depending on experience
2. Hours are Mon-Thurs 08:30 to 16:30 and Fri 08:30 to 15:30, a 36.5-hour week
3. 25 days annual leave
4. Annual Bonus – Pro rata on year of joining

Senior Mechanical Engineer – The Role

1. To manage the engineering team on a day-to-day basis, in relation to workload and Engineers workshop activity.
2. To have mechanical engineering experience, in relation to component and system failure analysis.
3. To have a willingness to support the business from a hands-on Engineering perspective including: overseeing condition assessments, preparation for FAIs, warranty claim investigation, problem solving, creating method statements, creating component overhaul and reclamation instructions, test procedures, support with material analysis and comparisons, report reviewing and sign off (list is indicative but not exhaustive).
4. Be accountable for the delivery of their own work and the review and approval of work from other members of the engineering team.
5. To have the ability to review drawings and designs created from reverse or re-engineering projects for mechanical components and systems.
6. Support the Head of Engineering in setting and upholding the standards.
7. To support junior engineers and workshop fitters across their range of tasks.
8. Assist and identify training requirements, ensuring the team continue their development in general engineering, product knowledge, safety, confidence, attitudes, processes, skills, standards, etc.
9. Assist purchasing and quality with approval of new supplier selection and assessment.
10. Assist with the improvement, development, implementation, and management of engineering processes in safety critical environments.
11. To understand and work within a range of requirements including British / ISO / RISAS standards applicable to mechanical and rail engineering systems.
12. To deputise for the Head of Engineering in their absence.

Senior Mechanical Engineer – The Person

1. Experienced engineer with (as a minimum) an HNC/HND qualification (or equivalent) in a mechanically biased engineering discipline.
2. A minimum of 15 years professional engineering experience, including 5 years of managing an engineering team with a good balance of general engineering, reverse engineering, unit testing, problem solving, understanding technical process, report writing and review for technical investigations, review task management.
3. Knowledge of various industries ranging from heavy Engineering, Rail – Marine, Power Generation and Oil - Gas sectors.
4. Knowledge of mechanical driveline and connecting products and systems these may include, high speed gearboxes, cardan shafts, highly flexible couplings, rail couplers, cooler groups would be advantageous but not essential.
5. An understanding of CAD packages such as Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor and Team Centre.
6. Knowledge of design and ability to review design proposals and drawings for quality and accuracy.
7. Knowledge of BS 8888 technical product documentation and specification.
8. Should have a HANDS-ON, flexible, positive, adaptable, and proactive approach, that can be used to support junior engineers and workshop technicians.
9. Fluent technical and conversational English.
10. Commercial awareness – understanding the impact of engineering actions and decisions on current contracts and future business.
11. Understanding of Production processes.
12. Understanding of Manufacturing processes.
13. Knowledge of the ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
14. Excellent communication skills on a technical level with both internal and external customers.
15. Strong numerical and analytical skills, including the ability to work from engineering first principles.
16. Genuine enthusiasm for Mechanical Engineering.
