Job Description:

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)

We are recruiting multiple Senior Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for long-term frameworks across the UK, including a £100 million framework with United Utilities to improve river health in Northwest England.

RPS has over 20 years of collaboration with United Utilities on innovative water projects. As we approach AMP8, this is an exciting time to work in the water industry, supporting sustainable and resilient water services in the Northwest.

About The Team:

Our Water Consulting team includes Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy to water industry clients, supporting business planning and delivery.

Beyond the United Utilities framework, we work with several major UK water companies, managing long-term framework agreements and leading major AMP8 programmes.

About You:

You should have experience producing technical specifications, designing pumping and aeration systems, and collaborating on design reviews. Ability to create General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, and P&ID diagrams is essential. Strong communication skills for technical presentations and collaborative discussions are required. Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and infrastructure assessment is important.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Work on projects across UK water frameworks.
  • Support project delivery with senior team members.
  • Mentor junior staff and support team development.
  • Understand technical drawings, asset surveys, and produce design deliverables.
  • Assist with safety and quality assurance procedures.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Water industry experience is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of pump design, P&ID creation, and specifications.
  • Familiarity with CDM regulations and contract methods.
  • Ability to manage work within time, cost, and quality constraints.
  • Support for junior staff and willingness to visit sites.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar software is a plus.

Qualifications:

  • IMechE-accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
  • Chartered status or working towards it; membership with professional institutions is desirable.
