Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)

We are recruiting multiple Senior Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for long-term frameworks across the UK. RPS, in collaboration with Tetra Tech, has secured a £100 million framework to support river health improvements across Northwest England. This is an exciting time in the water industry, offering opportunities to create positive change.

RPS has over 20 years of working with United Utilities on innovative projects. Under this 10-year framework, RPS will optimize programs, develop solutions, and select the best options based on value, carbon footprint, and cost, aiming to deliver exceptional water services and foster a resilient, eco-friendly Northwest.

About The Team:

RPS Water Consulting comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy to water industry clients. We work on prestigious AMP8 programs, ensuring long-term career development and impactful projects.

About You:

You should have experience producing technical outputs such as specifications, pump and aeration system designs, schedules, and reports. Familiarity with collaborative planning, design reviews, and safety assessments like HAZOPs is essential. You should understand water and wastewater treatment processes and be capable of assessing existing infrastructure for mechanical design projects.

Strong communication skills are required to deliver technical presentations and participate in design discussions. Joining us means contributing to projects that impact millions, working with leading water companies, and leaving a lasting legacy.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Work on various projects within long-term frameworks with UK water companies.
  • Support project delivery alongside Senior and Principal Engineers.
  • Mentor junior team members.
  • Interpret technical drawings using AutoCAD and/or Inventor.
  • Conduct asset condition surveys and prepare reports.
  • Contribute to P&ID creation.
  • Prepare mechanical design deliverables, including calculations, reports, specifications, and drawings.
  • Assist in ensuring project compliance with CDM regulations and safety standards.
  • Follow Quality Assurance procedures.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Experience in the water industry is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of pump design, P&ID creation, specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with contract procurement methods like NEC.
  • Ability to manage work within time, cost, and quality constraints.
  • Support junior staff development.
  • Willingness to travel to operational and construction sites.
  • Knowledge of design tools like AutoCAD is preferred but not essential.
Qualifications:
  • IMechE accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
  • Chartered or working towards chartership.
  • Membership or ongoing membership with professional bodies like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM.
