Sapien are a specialist engineering business near West Bromwich, delivering heavy lifting equipment and bespoke machinery. This role offers ownership from concept through detailed design, manufacture, testing and installation, with potential progression to senior technical leadership.

We are seeking an engineer with strong fundamentals in mechanics of materials, stress analysis and 3D CAD (Autodesk Inventor).

Qualifications

• Experience as Mechanical Design Engineer or Senior Design Engineer.
• Designing bespoke or special-purpose machinery.
• Strong fundamentals in mechanics of materials and stress analysis.
• 3D CAD experience with manufacturing drawings.
• Understanding of lifting equipment design is advantageous.
• Experience with FEA and practical manufacturing considerations.

Responsibilities

• Develop bespoke mechanical designs from concept through to detailed drawings.
• Produce engineering calculations, including hand calculations, Excel-based and FEA.
• Prepare design docs, technical reports, risk assessments and compliance docs.
• Select and specify mechanical components and equipment.
• Ensure designs are practical, safe and cost-efficient to manufacture.
• Collaborate with fabrication, welding and manufacturing teams.
• Provide technical support during testing, installation and commissioning.
• Support customer requirements at tender and manufacturing stages.
• Carry out site visits to gather information and discuss solutions.
• Ensure designs comply with UK and international standards and legislation.
• Maintain accurate design records and quality documentation.
• Support and check the work of other design team members.

Sapien are working with a specialist engineering business operating within the heavy engineering, lifting equipment and bespoke machinery sector based near West Bromwich.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects from initial concept through to detailed design, manufacture, testing and installation, with the opportunity to develop into a senior technical leadership position over time.

Job Responsibilities:

• Developing bespoke mechanical designs from initial concept through to detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Producing engineering calculations, including hand calculations, Excel-based calculations and FEA.
• Preparing design documentation, technical reports, risk assessments and compliance documentation.
• Selecting and specifying mechanical components and equipment.
• Ensuring designs are practical, safe and cost-effective to manufacture.
• Working closely with fabrication, welding and manufacturing teams throughout production.
• Providing technical support during testing, installation and commissioning.
• Supporting customer requirements at both tender and manufacturing stages.
• Carrying out site visits where required to gather information, discuss solutions and support commissioning.
• Ensuring designs comply with relevant UK and international standards and legislation.
• Maintaining accurate design records and quality documentation.
• Supporting and checking the work of other members of the design team.

Experience Required

• Experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer, Senior Design Engineer
• Experience designing bespoke or special-purpose machinery.
• Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and an understanding of mechanics of materials.
• Experience carrying out stress analysis and engineering calculations.
• Practical experience with FEA / finite element analysis.
• Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor.
• Experience producing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
• A good understanding of manufacturing processes, particularly fabrication, welding and machining.
• Experience designing lifting equipment would be highly advantageous.
• An understanding of UK machinery and workplace safety legislation, including LOLER, PUWER and UKCA.
