Job summary

Sapien has partnered with a specialist engineering business near West Bromwich seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership from concept through detailed design, manufacturing, testing and installation. The role offers a path to senior technical leadership.

You will develop bespoke machinery, perform stress analysis and FEA, produce manufacturing drawings, and ensure compliance with LOLER, PUWER and UKCA. Site visits and collaboration with fabrication teams are involved.

Qualifications

• Experience as Mechanical Design Engineer or Senior Design Engineer.
• Experience designing bespoke or special‑purpose machinery.
• Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and an understanding of mechanics of materials.
• Experience carrying out stress analysis and engineering calculations.
• Practical experience with FEA / finite element analysis.
• Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor.
• Experience producing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
• Good understanding of manufacturing processes, particularly fabrication, welding and machining.
• Experience designing lifting equipment would be highly advantageous.
• An understanding of UK machinery and workplace safety legislation, including LOLER, PUWER and UKCA.

Responsibilities

• Develop bespoke mechanical designs from initial concept through to detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Produce engineering calculations, including hand calculations, Excel–based calculations and FEA.
• Prepare design documentation, technical reports, risk assessments and compliance documentation.
• Select and specify mechanical components and equipment.
• Ensure designs are practical, safe and cost–effective to manufacture.
• Work closely with fabrication, welding and manufacturing teams throughout production.
• Provide technical support during testing, installation and commissioning.
• Support customer requirements at both tender and manufacturing stages.
• Carry out site visits where required to gather information, discuss solutions and support commissioning.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant UK and international standards and legislation.
• Maintain accurate design records and quality documentation.
• Support and check the work of other members of the design team.

Job Responsibilities:

• Developing bespoke mechanical designs from initial concept through to detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Producing engineering calculations, including hand calculations, Excel–based calculations and FEA.
