Job description

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Portsmouth

£60,000 - £75,000 (depending on Experience)

Full time - Permanent

Drive innovation. Engineer the future of clean marine technology.

Are you a passionate mechanical design engineer looking to work at the cutting edge of maritime sustainability? This is your opportunity to join a pioneering company that's redefining what’s possible on the water. Our client is a trailblazer in next-generation marine engineering — delivering radical, efficient propulsion and hydrodynamic solutions that are transforming the global shipping industry.

Driven by a mission to decarbonise maritime transport, this is not your average design engineering role. Here, you’ll work on revolutionary technologies that are already making waves — from advanced wing propulsion systems and foiling vessels to flight control and energy optimisation tech that significantly reduces fuel use across commercial fleets.

What You'll Be Doing:

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be a critical part of a fast-paced, highly skilled development team. You’ll own the mechanical systems across game-changing projects — from concept to manufacture — and bring visionary ideas to life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to develop mechanical concepts through to full production, ensuring quality, performance, and cost targets are met.
  • Work across a wide range of projects — from large, fabricated composite structures for series production to one-off, high-performance prototype vessels.
  • Lead smaller projects or play a key role within larger programmes, taking responsibility for core mechanical deliverables.
  • Own the mechanical design lifecycle — producing robust components and systems in line with company processes and industry standards.
  • Apply sound engineering judgement with detailed design calculations and classical hand calcs.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design methodology and digital toolsets.
  • Support concept generation and feasibility studies during pre-contract phases.
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers, fostering technical growth within the team.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and clients to ensure alignment and excellence in delivery.
  • Get hands-on with physical builds, testing and validation — bringing your ideas into the real world.
  • Support business development through proposal input and technical scoping.
  • Maintain oversight of multiple concurrent projects with clear tracking of risks, priorities, and delivery status.
  • Input into DFMEA creation and engage in full product validation cycles.
  • Oversee external resources and contractors, as needed, in collaboration with your line manager.

What We're Looking For:

  • A degree in mechanical, aerospace, automotive, or marine engineering.
  • Strong CAD proficiency — ideally Siemens NX — with a deep understanding of design for manufacture (DFM) and GD&T.
  • Expert knowledge of mechanical principles, with experience in detailed design and calculation of metallic and composite parts.
  • Familiarity with material properties, welding, bonding, and mechanical fixing techniques.
  • Experience in FEA analysis to inform and validate designs.
  • Confidence in managing complexity, juggling priorities, and leading technical workstreams.
  • Passion for engineering excellence and precision, with a mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Comfortable in a workshop and build environment — practical experience is a plus.
  • A proactive mentor and collaborative team player, capable of developing others as well as delivering your own work to high standards.

Why Join Us?

You’ll be part of a passionate and talented team working at the forefront of clean technology for marine and shipping applications. This is a place where your ideas matter, your designs get built, and your career can accelerate.

What’s on Offer:

  • A rare opportunity to directly influence the decarbonisation of global transport.
  • A collaborative, agile work environment where innovation thrives.
  • Access to cutting-edge projects and career-defining challenges.
  • Competitive salary and excellent benefits package, including:
    • 25 days holiday
    • Company pension
    • Private medical insurance
    • Life assurance
    • Electric car scheme
    • Cycle to work scheme
    • Regular social events and a supportive team culture

If you're ready to engineer the future of marine technology, we’d love to hear from you! Send your current CV over and one of our team members will be in touch.
