Job description

Job Description

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Our client is at the forefront of innovative Marine engineering, specialising in the design, optimisation, and supply of decarbonisation solutions for the maritime industry. Born from the America’s Cup, they utilise that cutting edge, fast paced development expertise to create world leading products that redefine the industry. With their expertise in wing propulsion, foiling and flight control systems, they are leading the sustainability revolution within the maritime and shipping industry. From reducing fuel consumption—measured in tonnes per day—on ocean-going ships through their sail technology and advanced efficiency optimisation methods, to enabling the growth of marine electrification with the implementation of their foiling and FOSS solutions. They are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team and contribute to this pioneering work.

Your role will be instrumental to the design of their current and future projects, working alongside industry-leading experts to take ownership of mechanical systems, from concept through to production.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role:
  • Work within an integrated, multi-disciplinary design and development team to generate design concepts through to production, ensuring solutions meet all project requirements for function, quality, timing, and cost.
  • Engage in a variety of projects, from 40m fabricated sail structures for series production to a one-off prototype for a small foiling vessel.
  • Lead or contribute to large programs or smaller projects, working closely with the technical lead engineer.
  • Take responsibility for delivering the design of components and systems according to company processes and standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of methodologies and toolsets to stay at the forefront of innovation.
  • Support pre-contract and concept phases, including feasibility studies and early-stage planning.
  • Lead and develop junior team members.
  • Perform hand calculations for mechanical fixings, inserts, and bonded joints.
  • Maintain technical liaison with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support business development activities and customer proposals.
  • Assist in project management, monitor plans, progress, and risks.
  • Manage multiple projects, prioritising tasks and demonstrating progress and key risks.
  • Support physical build, evaluation, and validation activities.
  • Assist in the compilation of DFMEAs.
  • Manage external resources in conjunction with line management.
Requirements:
  • Degree in mechanical, automotive, marine, or aerospace engineering.
  • Extensive experience with a major CAD system (preferably NX), producing detailed drawings with GD&T and DFM.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and design calculations.
  • Experience in designing metallic and composite components.
  • Knowledge of materials, welding, bonding, and fastening techniques.
  • Familiarity with workshop activities like fabrication and CNC machining (desirable).
  • Experience with hand calculations and creating calculation sheets.
  • Experience with FEA tools to support validation and development (preferable).
  • Knowledge of TeamCentre and Siemens SimCentre (advantageous).
  • Understanding of manufacturing techniques (desirable).
  • Ability to coach and supervise junior engineers and delegate tasks.
  • Teamwork skills, able to give and receive instructions.
  • Project management experience (an advantage).
  • Ownership-driven, self-motivated, with attention to detail and validation techniques.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary
  • 25 days holiday
  • Company pension
  • Private medical insurance
