JOB- Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

LOCATION- Newcastle

TERM- Permanent

SALARY- £40,000 to £60,000 per annum (plus benefits)

Premier Engineering is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading defence sector company based in Newcastle. This role will involve designing complex mechanical systems and components for defence applications, ensuring high performance and compliance with industry standards.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will ideally have the following attributes:

• A degree or HND/HNC in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
• Strong experience in mechanical design within the defence, aerospace, or high-security sectors
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar)
• Knowledge of materials, machining, and fabrication processes, including precision engineering
• Experience with designing for manufacturability, assembly (DFM/DFA), and military standards
• Ability to conduct design analysis, FEA, and tolerance studies
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
• Knowledge of defence industry regulations and security clearance eligibility (desirable)

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role will involve:

• Leading the design and development of mechanical components and systems for defence applications
• Producing detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and BOMs
• Performing structural and thermal analysis to validate designs
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams including electrical, manufacturing, and project teams
• Ensuring designs meet defence sector compliance and safety standards
• Overseeing prototype development, testing, and validation
• Identifying and implementing cost-effective design improvements
• Supporting project delivery, from concept through to production
