Cooled Motors is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to advance our electric motor drive technologies. You will develop mechanical designs, create detailed CAD models, and prepare production-ready drawings.
The role involves close collaboration with the engineering team to tackle mechanical, thermal, and packaging challenges. You will work on prototype builds and supplier engagement, ensuring manufacturability and high-quality documentation.
Cooled Motors is developing next-generation electric drive systems for high-performance automotive and aerospace applications.
We are building advanced propulsion technologies that combine innovations in electric-machine, power electronics, control systems and thermal management to deliver compact, efficient and scalable electric drives for the future of mobility.
Our work sits at the intersection of electric vehicles, aerospace propulsion, advanced manufacturing and clean technology. We are tackling some of the most important challenges in electrification: improving performance, reducing system cost, increasing power density and enabling more sustainable supply chains.
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of our electric motor drive technologies. The role will focus on mechanical design, CAD modelling, engineering drawings, supplier communication, and supporting the development of prototype and production-intent components.
You will work closely with the technical team to turn concepts into manufacturable designs, prepare clear engineering documentation, and support supplier engagement for prototype and manufacturing activities.
You will:
Develop mechanical designs for electric motor components, assemblies, and test hardware.
Create detailed 3D CAD models and complex mechanical assemblies.
Produce engineering drawings in accordance with BS 8888 and good drawing practice.
Apply GD&T principles to define tolerances, fits, interfaces, and critical features.
Support design for manufacture, assembly, and inspection.
Communicate with suppliers to request quotes, review manufacturability, clarify drawings, and support component delivery.
Review supplier feedback and update designs or drawings where required.
Support prototype build, testing, and design iteration.
Work with the engineering team to solve mechanical, thermal, structural, and packaging challenges.
Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and revision-controlled engineering files.
A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline.
Strong experience creating engineering drawings to BS 8888.
Good understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, fits, and manufacturing constraints.
Experience with complex CAD design and mechanical assemblies.
Experience using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD software.
Ability to communicate clearly with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
Good understanding of mechanical materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture.
Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate engineering documentation.
Experience in the automotive, aerospace, electric motor, powertrain, or advanced manufacturing sectors.
Structural FEA experience, preferably using ANSYS, Altair, or similar tools.
Thermal CFD experience, preferably using ANSYS, Altair, or similar tools.
Experience with rotating machinery, electric motors, cooling systems, or high-performance mechanical assemblies.
Experience supporting prototype builds, testing, and design validation.
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related subject.
Experience working in a startup, R&D, or fast-paced engineering environment.
The ideal candidate is a practical mechanical engineer who can take a design from concept through to detailed CAD, drawings, supplier discussions, and prototype manufacture. You should be comfortable working with complex designs, solving engineering problems, and producing clear documentation that suppliers can manufacture from.
It is preferred to have good electric motor experience, you should be interested in advanced engineering, future mobility, and high-performance mechanical systems.
Cooled motors has multiple small offices and access to co-working spaces in the following locations Sheffield, Coventry, Oxford and London. We operate a hybrid working model and site work when essential.
