Join our Team as a Senior Materials Scientist (Ceramics) at Lucideon!

We are actively seeking a Senior Materials Scientist, specialising in Ceramics, to support Lucideon’s work shaping the future of engineering ceramics innovation; you will be part of a team of dedicated individuals who are on a global mission!

Who You Are

We are looking for an industry experienced Materials Scientist to join our Advanced Materials team. If you have a strong understanding of advanced ceramic materials and processes, with proven industry experience in materials science (preferably advanced ceramics), and practical experience in powder processing and forming methods, we want to hear from you! This is a unique role in a fast-paced and fascinating part of our business; you need to be eternally curious about science and technology and want to be a key player in pioneering R&D projects across aerospace, nuclear energy, defence and more.

Job Purpose

As a Senior Materials Scientist, you will partner with clients to scope, develop and deliver projects of commercial and scientific value. In this role you will work mainly in the nuclear, aerospace and defence sectors, developing materials and manufacturing processes including slurry and dough formulations, pressing and casting processes, additive manufacturing and ceramic matrix composites. Having recently moved to a state-of-the-art facility in Stone, Staffordshire, you will be utilising our unique facilities to work on a wide range of ceramic materials, from alumina and zirconia to silicon carbide, ultra-high temperature ceramics, transparent ceramics and scintillators to name a few!

The work is varied, and so, we are looking for someone who is comfortable learning about new materials and manufacturing techniques. You must have a strong foundation in ceramics processing with a willingness to both learn from and guide colleagues as we develop the materials for the future.

Core Responsibilities Include

  • Run complex client projects, spanning anything from 1 to 24 months
  • Scope and lead programs of work for clients in collaboration with commercial colleagues.
  • As an expert in key equipment and processes, you will advise on best practices and support the preparation of relevant documentation.
  • Provide consultancy for clients, which might include literature reviews and materials optioneering.
  • Mentor junior colleagues in their career and professional development.
  • Conduct hands on development of processes and materials.
  • Give technical presentations to clients and peers.
  • Represent Lucideon at conferences and seminars.
  • Prepare and deliver training materials on an occasional basis.

Key Person Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's or PhD in Materials Science/Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical experience in materials science (preferably advanced ceramics).
  • Ability to engage with customers to understand and develop commercial opportunities
  • Have a strong understanding and practical skills in materials science, in particular advanced ceramic materials and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and spoken.
  • Able to plan and lead large projects and design experiments in a logical manner.
  • Highly motivated, able to work in a team and provide mentoring for team members.
  • Ability to influence and communicate at all levels both internally and externally.
  • Comfortable in making logical high-pressure decisions.
  • Comfortable in working on defence projects.
  • Must be eligible for security clearance.
