Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Frigates and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates, the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft to aircraft carriers.

The role

As a Senior Marine Structural Engineer, you will hold a highly prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding program, developing designs through concept and early-stage design, as well as supporting the bidding process. This role offers the opportunity to deliver complex structural solutions within an exciting team environment, with new challenges weekly to test your skills and knowledge.

Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for authoring, reviewing, and substantiating marine designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning, and diagnostic test support. You will contribute to and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs. You will act as Technical Authority with deep subject knowledge of marine engineering.

Primary deliverables of the Senior Marine Structural Engineer

• Substantiation reports and designs for installation solutions.
• Preparation and production of substantiation reports for marine solutions across all design phases, aligned with recognized standards and within time, cost, and quality requirements.
• Liaising with design teams and stakeholders during the design lifecycle to ensure system design coordination and functionality, including supporting design reviews.
• Developing innovative design solutions with robust engineering substantiation.
• Providing solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in resolving technical and production queries.
• Producing technical reports and documentation.

This is a permanent position, working Monday to Friday, with flexible working options to better balance work and personal life, including office attendance and travel as needed. We are open to discussing these arrangements further.

Essential experience of the Senior Marine Structural Engineer

• Proven structural design experience in a highly regulated industry.
• Experience with analytical software such as FEA, CFD, and CAD.
• Experience contributing to design reviews.

Qualifications

• Ideally degree qualified; HND/HNC in engineering with extensive relevant experience will be considered.
• Membership in relevant institutions (e.g., RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst) and Chartered or Incorporated status (or working towards it) is preferred.

The successful candidate will have or be able to obtain SC security clearance.
