Job summary

Lloyds Banking Group is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in the UK. The role focuses on building and maintaining ML solutions in production for the Consumer data science team, applying strong software engineering in a data-driven environment.

You will contribute to large-scale ML systems, collaborate across business and tech teams, and drive architectural decisions while embracing hybrid working patterns.

Qualifications

• Advanced software engineering practices, automated testing, CI/CD and production deployments.
• Commercial experience with Python ML libraries: Pandas, Scikit‑learn, XGBoost.
• Experience with cloud services and data stores such as Vertex AI, BigQuery and Cloud Run.
• Hands‑on with MLOps tooling like Kubeflow Pipelines and dbt, including production monitoring.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and Kubernetes.

JOB TITLE: Senior Machine Learning Engineer

SALARY: £72,702 - £80,780

LOCATION(S): Bristol, Chester or Manchester

HOURS: Full time, 35 hours per week

What you’ll be doing

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll play a meaningful role in building and maintaining machine learning solutions in production across the Consumer business within Lloyds Banking Group. You’ll bring strong software engineering experience applied within a machine learning and data environment, using this to make things better for the Group and its customers.

Being part of the Consumer Data Science team will allow you to gain insight into how the business functions and supports its customers. You will encounter a diverse range of projects, coworkers, and technologies, assisting the team in generating value from machine learning.

As the team grows, the role will keep changing. We want to hear from applicants who are driven, inquisitive, eager to learn, and open to exploring new work methods. Candidates should have a strong background in large-scale applications and data platforms.

• Develop and maintain machine learning systems in Python alongside data scientists and other machine learning engineers.

• Take projects from experimentation through to production, including design and integration with other systems such as continuous integration and continuous delivery tools, application programming interfaces, and Dynatrace.

• Engage with collaborators across business and technical teams to understand requirements and influence decision‑making.

• Propose, evaluate and advocate for technology, platform and architecture choices in line with Lloyds Banking Group guidelines.

• Drive excellent engineering standards, consistency and culture across the team through technical leadership and knowledge sharing.

• Play a leading role in incident management and resolution, working closely with the strategic platform team and business partners.

• Proactively find opportunities to improve solutions and present clear plans to deliver them.

• Provide results aligned with data science, model governance, and risk management policies and procedures, sustaining positive connections with specialized colleagues within these domains.

What we’re looking for

• Advanced understanding of software engineering best practice, programming concepts, automated testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery, and production deployments.

• Commercial experience using key Python libraries for machine learning, such as Pandas, Scikit‑learn and XGBoost.

• Proven development experience with cloud services, data stores and architectures, such as Vertex AI, BigQuery and Cloud Run.

• Hands‑on experience with machine learning operations tooling and frameworks used with large datasets, such as Kubeflow Pipelines and dbt, including an understanding of production monitoring.

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, including Terraform, Kubernetes, application programming interface authentication flows and networking.

• Experience collaborating with central platform, architecture and governance teams to move solutions into live production.

• Experience across the full software development lifecycle, from experimentation through to live production.

• A sound understanding of retail banking, or a desire to learn how to apply your technical skills in this area.

Desirable skills/experience

• Exposure to generative artificial intelligence and agentic tooling, such as Agent Development Kit or LangChain.

• Experience configuring large language models to optimise cost and benefit.
