Job description

Climate17 is proud to be working with a pioneering heat network consultancy that is playing a leading role in the decarbonisation of heat across the UK. We are seeking a skilled and motivated M&E Consulting Engineer to join their specialist Energy Centre and Heat Network Design Team.

In this technically focused position, you will be responsible for the mechanical and electrical design of low-carbon energy infrastructure, including communal and district heating systems, energy centres, and associated building services.

You will support the delivery of complex residential and commercial projects from early-stage feasibility through to detailed design, ensuring efficient, compliant, and innovative heat network solutions. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the UK’s net-zero targets by engineering the backbone of sustainable energy infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and coordinate mechanical and electrical systems for energy centres and district heating networks, including HVAC, pumps, heat exchangers, electrical panels, and control systems.
  • Develop 3D models and detailed technical drawings using Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD, integrating both mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Prepare comprehensive M&E design documentation, including schematics, calculations, specifications, schedules, and layout drawings aligned with RIBA Stages.
  • Undertake load assessments, pipework sizing, plant selection, and electrical distribution layouts using standard industry tools and software.
  • Collaborate with internal engineers, external consultants, and clients to resolve technical challenges and ensure seamless integration of heat networks into building services.
  • Participate in BIM coordination meetings and clash detection processes to deliver fully coordinated design packages.
  • Contribute to tendering and construction stages by reviewing contractor submittals and responding to technical RFIs.
  • Provide support during commissioning and handover to ensure system performance meets design intent and regulatory compliance.

Requirements
Essential:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an M&E consulting or building services design environment.
  • Demonstrable experience with heat networks, energy centres, or central plant systems in multi-residential or commercial projects.
  • Strong technical capability in both mechanical and electrical systems design.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD for M&E services.
  • Familiarity with building services calculations and software (e.g., Hevacomp, IES).
  • Understanding of UK Building Regulations and sustainability-driven engineering practices.
Desirable:
  • Experience with BIM coordination tools such as Navisworks for clash detection and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Knowledge of CIBSE guidelines, CDM regulations, and heat network standards (e.g., ADE/CIBSE CP1).
  • Awareness of heat decarbonisation policy and low-carbon technology integration.
  • Progress toward Chartered status with CIBSE or IMechE.

Professional Development
  • Structured development programme for engineers specialising in heat network M&E design.
  • Mentorship opportunities and support toward Chartership.
  • Exposure to industry-leading projects and emerging technologies in district energy systems.

Why Join?
You’ll be joining a market-leading consultancy at the forefront of delivering innovative and sustainable heat network infrastructure. Your work will directly contribute to the UK’s low-carbon heat transition, shaping the future of urban energy systems.
