Job Description:

The University of London

The University of London is the UK’s largest provider of international distance and online learning and the convenor of a federation of 17 London-based universities, many of which are among the highest-ranking universities in the world.

Collectively the federation represents a cohort of some 250,000 learners and 50,000 academic and professional services staff. Within this cohort are around 40,000 University of London students who study programmes which are developed and delivered in partnership with our 17 federation members.

The University of London is also home to the School of Advanced Study, the national centre for the humanities and a champion for the arts and humanities.

Although proudly rooted in London, our community and impact are global.

Our passion for increasing access to education and mobilising the collective power and expertise of the federation is central to our ability to transform lives around the world and address the global challenges of the future

The Role

The London Research and Policy Partnership (LRaPP) are seeking a dynamic researcher, knowledge broker or policy professional to lead the creation and development of London-based Areas of Research Interest (ARI). This role is pivotal in shaping the future research landscape that will inform policymaking in London. The successful candidate will develop a methodology that aligns with the GLA’s needs, engage with key stakeholders to identify research priorities, organize evidence-gathering sessions, and produce actionable insights. This project will provide a practical route for London researchers looking to apply their expertise to real world problems.

Currently, there is no established mechanism in London that synthesizes research priorities from the perspective of London policymakers. This would present a significant opportunity for researchers to contribute their expertise in a way that directly informs and shapes policy decisions. Other regions in the UK have begun implementing their own Areas of Research Interest (ARI) frameworks, demonstrating the potential impact of such an approach. Given the scale and complexity of London’s governance landscape - encompassing a diverse range of boroughs, research institutions, and policy areas - there is a need for a structured and strategic way to align academic research with policy priorities.

The ideal candidate will be adept at engaging with a broad range of stakeholders across London’s policy and academic ecosystem, understanding their priorities, and able to synthesize key research needs into a coherent framework. By establishing London-specific Areas of Research Interest, this project will help bridge the gap between research and policymaking, ensuring that academic expertise is effectively harnessed to shape the city’s future.

LRaPP is working on developing its main products and services to make it easier for academics and policymakers to engage with each other and tackle urban challenges across London.
