Senior Legal Counsel - Commercial Contracts
About this role
Capital One is seeking an experienced in-house commercial contracts solicitor within the UK Legal Team to lead on technology contracts for the UK business.
Reporting to the head of UK Contracts, you will provide legal advice on supplier contracts, including SaaS agreements, software licences, outsourcing contracts, and IT infrastructure arrangements, along with other commercial matters.
Our Contracts team manages risk when engaging suppliers. We seek a team player with excellent communication, contract drafting and negotiating skills, and commercial acumen. This role offers an exciting career opportunity.
What you'll do
- Prepare and negotiate contractual arrangements such as services agreements, outsourcing agreements, SaaS and cloud agreements, software licences, and other related contracts.
- Support UK aspects of global agreements, particularly focusing on SaaS, in collaboration with US Legal and supplier management teams.
- Manage contractual workstreams within the technology department, ensuring timely and aligned legal considerations.
- Advise on legal, regulatory risks, outsourcing, data protection, intercompany agreements, and international matters, collaborating with legal specialists as needed.
- Supervise and mentor junior team members in contract negotiation, drafting, and legal research.
- Develop relationships with stakeholders including suppliers, sourcing, and business managers within UK and US teams.
- Identify and assess legal impacts of new laws, provide training, and advise on legal risks for new tech initiatives.
- Manage external counsel input when necessary.
- Handle workload efficiently and communicate progress proactively.
- Ensure adherence to contract procedures and escalate risks appropriately.
- Support personal development and mentor others.
What we're looking for
- Qualified solicitor with substantial experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial and technology contracts, with strong data protection knowledge.
- In-house experience preferred, ideally in financial services, but not essential.
- Strategic thinker with problem-solving skills.
- Excellent workload management skills, adaptable to a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages.
- Proven track record of delivering results.
- Relationship-building and teamwork skills across various functions.
