Job description

If you’re looking for a career that will unlock new opportunities, join HSBC and experience the possibilities. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC’s Legal function plays a critical role in supporting the bank’s global operations, managing legal risk, and ensuring the efficient and effective use of external legal resources. We work closely with leading law firms and alternative legal service providers (ALSPs) to secure the best commercial and strategic outcomes for the bank.

We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join the UK and Europe Banking CIB Legal team. As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide expert legal advice, guidance, and support to identify, report, and mitigate legal and reputational risks. This role typically reports to a Managing Associate General Counsel.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you will have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package, including private healthcare, enhanced maternity and adoption pay, support upon return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and manage a team of credit & lending specialized lawyers supporting the Global Network Banking, Global Corporates, and International Mid Market Coverage teams in HBEU and HBEU branches with flow lending transactional requirements and related client issues.
  • Support Global Credit and Lending initiatives/projects across CIB broadly, including regional and/or global regulatory, transformation, or simplification projects.
  • Serve as the accountable lawyer to the Business on legal issues, providing pragmatic, cost-effective legal support and advice.
  • Guide and support the Business on non-standard legal and reputational risks related to clients in their segments. Responsible for training, supervising, and reviewing team members' work, and creating/updating negotiation guidelines and support materials.
  • Evaluate and respond to changes in legal and regulatory requirements affecting Credit & Lending products, processes, and controls.
  • Collaborate with the UK and Europe Banking CIB legal team and other jurisdiction teams to ensure effective sharing of legal knowledge and best practices.

To be successful, you should:

  • Be an English-qualified lawyer with relevant experience in a financial institution or top-tier private practice.
  • Have lending specialization; leveraged or project finance experience is desirable.
  • Experience managing a team of lawyers and paraprofessionals is desirable.
  • Maintain knowledge of HSBC Group operations and policies.
  • Possess strong relationship management skills and inspire confidence among stakeholders.
  • Be able to navigate multiple stakeholders with competing priorities under time pressure.

The role is based in London with a hybrid working pattern.

HSBC values diversity and inclusion, striving to create accessible workplaces for everyone. We are proud to be a Disability Confident Leader and will offer interviews to candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, or neurodivergence who meet the role's minimum criteria.
