Job Description:

Senior Lecturer / Supervising Solicitor, College of Social Sciences & Arts, Academic Grade 8 - £45,413 - £57,422 per annum, depending on experience.

Sheffield Hallam University has a proud 30-year tradition of delivering clinical legal education and applied learning. Our award-winning Hallam Legal Advice Centre (HLAC) is central to this, offering students invaluable hands-on legal experience while serving local communities across a broad range of legal needs. Our advice centre is student-led, meaning students provide legal advice under the supervision of qualified professionals whilst providing free pro bono advice and support to clients. This model enables our students to develop practical legal skills and build professional networks that support successful legal careers.

We are now seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Lecturer and Supervising Solicitor to lead, mentor, and manage the HLAC. This key role ensures high-quality service delivery, compliance with professional and regulatory standards, and a consistently outstanding student experience.

About the Role
  • Oversee and supervise the legal work carried out by students
  • Ensure compliance with professional obligations and best practice standards
  • Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment
  • Manage and develop a team of qualified solicitors
  • Develop strategic partnerships with law firms, pro bono and charitable organisations
  • Contribute to teaching and curriculum development aligned with our applied learning strategy

You will be joining the Institute at an exciting time, as we:

  • Implement a refreshed undergraduate and postgraduate law curriculum with clinical legal education embedded throughout
  • Expand placement opportunities across the broader Institute of Law & Justice
  • Move into a new flagship space at our city centre campus, offering greater proximity to the courts and local legal community

Currently, HLAC provides advice and representation in civil, commercial, family, and criminal law. We are particularly keen to expand into housing, employment, welfare, and immigration law, and welcome applicants with interest or experience in these areas.

About You

We are seeking a candidate with:

  • Significant legal practice experience and/or experience managing a law clinic or equivalent pro bono organisation
  • A current practising certificate as a solicitor
  • A strong commitment to widening access to justice and applied legal education
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively across teams and external partners to develop innovative opportunities for students

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a strategic leadership role in shaping the future of clinical legal education at one of the UK’s leading applied universities. We offer a diverse range of benefits and opportunities to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career in a supportive environment.

You will be contractually enrolled into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) – one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country. Find out more about the TPS. If you are, or have been, a recent member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) directly prior to joining us, you can choose to opt out of the TPS and remain in the USS. Please contact the Pensions team to discuss options available.

The University may be able to sponsor the employment of international applicants in this role; this will depend on a number of factors specific to the individual applicant. To find out more, take a look at our guide to applying.
