Job Description

Job Purpose

You will make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. You will also contribute as appropriate to School/College/University knowledge exchange and management/administrative activities and engage in leadership duties both within and out with the university at national and international scales. In addition, you will actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead and sustain internationally leading research activity in biogerontology, geroscience, signalling, microbiome science and nutritional biology.
  • Lead research networks within the College/School
  • Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy.
  • Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.
  • Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.
  • Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams (beyond subject/school level).
  • Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.
  • Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online provision.
  • Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.
  • Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.
  • Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.
  • Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.
  • Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.

A2. Recognised expertise in subject discipline/specialism to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field, specifically, demonstrably extensive knowledge in the biology of ageing, metabolism, microbiome, nutrition, genetics, signalling and omics, with an established international academic profile in these areas.

A3. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

A4. Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

A5. Engagement with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions.

A6. Membership of a relevant professional body, if applicable.

Essential:

Skills

C1. Proven capacity to lead a research team of postdoctoral associates, postgraduate students and technical staff, using genetic methodologies in a model system.

C2. Ability to lead others in developing novel research methodologies and technical approaches for studying nutrition and ageing.

C3. Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding.

C3. Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

C4. Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School.

C5. Substantial track record of research outputs and of applying for, and securing, external research funding compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.

C6. Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources, and practices that support replication.

C7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (oral and written) in an appropriate range of contexts.

C8. Proven capacity to lead a research team deploying genetic, genomic and metabolomic methodologies.

C9. Proven ability to plan, lead staff, and efficiently deploy resources.

C10. Proven ability to develop and lead an internationally significant research programme.

C11. Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.

C12. Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in subject area/team.

Experience

Essential:

E1. A track record of integrating machine learning and/or computational biology with genetics/genomics.

E2. Experience and achievement in biogerontology, genetics, signalling, nutrition, metabolism, 'omics, and microbiome science, reflected in an expanding academic portfolio.

E3. Experience of leading and managing a research team using lab model organisms.

E4. The ability to set performance standards within a team, ensuring that these are agreed, understood and monitored - taking appropriate, corrective action to ensure standards are consistently met and enhanced.

E5. Experience of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of literature, design and analysis of research data and drafting of papers.

E6. Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.

E7. An established leading international reputation and insight into the research area.

E8. Track record and ability, drive and organisational skills to secure research grant funding, lead a research team and develop an international research profile.

E9. Experience of developing, consolidating and contributing to international and national collaborations, and a sustained international impact.

E10. Experience of management and leadership in an academic environment.

Desirable:

F1. An understanding of online and distance learning technologies.

F2. Track record of impact outside academia e.g. policy or industry.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 9, £59,139 - £66,537 per annum.
