Senior Lecturer in Law (Teaching & Research)

School of Law and Politics

The School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint Senior Lecturers (Grade 8) in Law.

The successful candidates will be or have the potential to be: excellent teachers and scholars; hold a PhD or equivalent professional expertise in Law or a cognate field; and have an ambitious research agenda that supports and/or expands the School’s current research strengths. The specific area(s) of legal research expertise and teaching within Law are Intellectual Property Law, Commercial Law, Competition Law, Consumer Law, and Law and Technology.

The post holders may also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and contribute to the successful administration and management of the Law School.

Positions are open-ended and available as a full or part-time role. In supporting our employees to achieve a balance between their work and their personal lives, we will also consider proposals for flexible working or job share arrangements.

Job Description

As a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Law School the successful applicant will be required to deliver high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. The successful applicant should be an active and collegiate member of the school community and contribute to every aspect of school life.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

Research

  • To conduct original and innovative research within the discipline of Law and contribute to the overall internationally recognised research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in international academic journals, international conferences and/or other research outputs,
  • Develop research projects which have potential to receive internal or external funding.
  • To give invited addresses to professional meetings and conferences at national and international level, building networks to develop research outputs and standing within the area of specialism to participate in School research activities
  • Contribute to the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students and PhD supervision as a co-supervisor, reviewer or supervisor
  • Actively participate in School research activities and the research and scholarship community.
  • Have the potential to contribute to impact case studies, if appropriate
  • To contribute fully to the management of postgraduate research

Teaching

  • To lead on degree and module development and delivery and contribute to the pedagogy of subject area
  • To act as programme manager, module leader and / or tutor – ensuring delivery of teaching in line with current curricular requirements, developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • To undertake work associated with examinations, such as setting and marking assessments and providing student feedback
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students, including supervising the work of Undergraduate and Master’s students, the co-supervision of PGR’s and acting as a PGR progress review panel member as required
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and engage in the peer review processes
  • Participate in the teaching community including committee membership and student engagement activities

Leadership

  • To provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure areas of research/degree courses are organised and delivered effectively
  • To be involved in the departmental level strategic planning and contribute to wider strategic planning processes in the University

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience

  • Substantial teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level, demonstrating teaching innovation and course development and design
  • Established national and growing international reputation within academic field
  • Proven substantial record of publications in national and international journals and/or other research outputs.
  • Proven record of contributing and leading successful research bids
  • Proven ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes including in two or more of the following fields: Intellectual Property Law, Commercial Law, Competition Law, Consumer Law, Law and Technology,

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

  • Proven record of academic leadership
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor

Desirable Criteria

  • Ability to teach Company Law, and/or Contract Law
  • Ability to teach in the medium of Welsh.
  • Ability to support or deliver pro-bono teaching.
