Full Time, Permanent

Birmingham City University is a large, vibrant and culturally rich higher education provider based in the heart of the city. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Senior Lecturer on our BA (Hons) Filmmaking course within the College of Digital Arts, ranked as the number one film degree course in the UK (Guardian League Tables, 2025).

A key focus of the course is the aesthetic and creative aspects of filmmaking, considering both mainstream and experimental modes, and how these are mediated by different production and post-production techniques. The curriculum emphasizes theoretical and practice-based filmmaking techniques, with a strong focus on employability.

The course is based at the College of Digital Arts, within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media (ADM) in the Curzon Building, Eastside Birmingham, with excellent access to transport links. The university boasts industry-standard filmmaking facilities, hired by major companies like Sony, Disney, Channel 4, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Jaguar Land Rover. Birmingham's growing film and TV industry presents opportunities for collaboration and industry engagement.

We seek a dynamic and visionary senior academic and Course Leader with high-level creative and technical practice, extensive university teaching experience, and an understanding of the evolving film industry. The candidate will lead a staff team, so line management experience is advantageous.

Applicants should have industry experience and preferably a research profile. They should be familiar with film technology, practice, theory, and concepts, including directing, cinematography, sound, editing, conceptual problem solving, studio production, and research.

The ability to teach across all course levels and lead programme development is essential. A teaching qualification and/or HEA Fellowship are desirable.

In return, we offer a generous pension and annual leave (40 days including statutory holidays), family-friendly policies, and state-of-the-art campus facilities.
