Introduction

Global Journalism is a key team within BBC World Service Languages. It provides high quality journalism and production, making text, video and social content that drives reach and engages audiences worldwide. Our core mission is to offer content to language services that enables them to cover and explain the world to their audiences, focusing on content that will grow those audiences.

The Global Science and Climate team sits within our department and provides text and short video content to World Service language services and BBC News. The aim of the team is to grow audiences by offering a regular stream of SEO optimised and audience informed text and video on the Global Science and Climate brief.

We are looking a creative Journalist with a rich background in digital text and video production and a keen eye for story angles which will bring new audiences to BBC World Service language digital and social platforms. We are seeking motivated Journalist who is skilled at writing explanatory text stories with complementary video scripts, stays on top of social media video trends, has a sharp eye for spotting viral stories, and brings accomplished text and video storytelling skills. This role requires understanding of the BBC's 41 language services, strong text skills and experience in using both Optimo and FCP or other video editing software. Candidates should have some experience using social media listening and monitoring tools to identify emerging trends, and pitch story ideas.

Main responsibilities

  • Research and pitch fresh, on-trend Global Science and Climate ideas which meet the expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC editorial guidelines.
  • Produce your own text and video stories within the Global Science and Climate brief - from ideation to distribution to the BBC's 41 language services
  • Cover early, late or mid shifts across the week.
  • Stay up to date with the latest editing trends in short video production and be able to use FCP or other editing software
  • Be aware of social video trends and proactively stay across the news agenda.
  • Use social media listening and monitoring tools to identify emerging trends in the field of Global Science and Climate.
  • Use monitoring tools to stay across WS language services' websites, IG, TikTok, YouTube and FB accounts to spot overperforming stories that can be shared with wider audiences, and actively suggest these stories to the team manager.
  • Write clear explanatory text stories and video scripts, and proactively stay up to date with style changes, verification processes, copyright, legal and editorial issues.
  • Guide colleagues who you may team up with through processes that ensure our journalism is the best it can be in terms of accuracy, verification, impartiality, editorial policy and legal stance.
  • Meet tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Be able to evaluate and choose experts within a field, being mindful of our reputation and commitment to impartiality.


Are you the right candidate?

We are a positive, enthusiastic team, closely following developments and social trends in the field of Global Science and Climate - and contributing to developing new ways to reach our global audiences across the BBC's 41 WS language services. You will be self-driven to succeed bringing lots of your own enthusiasm. In addition, you will:
  • Be an experienced journalist with evidenced knowledge of global science & climate.
  • Have a high standard of editorial judgment, writing, scripting and editing ability based on substantial digital journalism experience with a major media outlet.
  • Be on top of trends in Global Science and Climate, have a sharp eye for spotting stories that will resonate well with WSL audiences across multiple regions.
  • Have strong text writing and editing skills and some knowledge of either FCP/Premier Pro video editing. You will also be well-versed at scripting and editing short video.
  • Have some experience in using social listening and monitoring tools for discovering overperforming text and video content within the Global Science and Climate remit.
  • Know how to maximise opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent and feel comfortable managing resources and technical facilities.
  • Be able to flex and adapt to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Be a strong planner and be able to prioritise activities taking into account relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
  • Be a journalist with demonstrable commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit us.
