Job Introduction

News on iPlayer is a pioneering multidisciplinary team, charged with delivering, creating and curating the best of BBC News on iPlayer. The team aims to serve and grow audiences consuming news on our streaming platform, both on demand and live.

Piloting and testing new formats in the VOD space is crucial, while also ensuring we improve the existing programme offer on BBC iPlayer through better curation, iPlayer-first delivery and more. Streaming audiences are constantly evolving, so we must too!

As a Senior Journalist, you’ll play a key role in helping to deliver the best of BBC News on iPlayer – curating, originating and co-ordinating a wide variety of content for all audiences.

Main Responsibilities

News for live and on demand audiences requires a data-driven, always on, agile team that is continually developing and adapting our offer to meet audience needs. As a Senior Journalist on the team you’ll work with colleagues across the BBC to showcase BBC News at its best.

iPlayer is a major priority for the BBC and for BBC News. You will use analytics and audience research confidently to help guide decisions, curating, modifying and tweaking our output day-to-day to deliver the very best content to our on-demand and live audiences.

Working between a daily news operation and an agile, iterative development team you will be equally at home operating with colleagues across the BBC on key news coverage; or working with audience panels to develop and create new formats for our platforms.

Experimentation, piloting and continual improvement are key to success. You should be at home working across a number of simultaneous projects and be prepared for continuous change.

We need to build our VOD audiences and grow our live audience on iPlayer. It’s an exciting opportunity to shape the future of the industry and you’ll be motivated to embrace the challenge and work with others to seize the opportunity.

Senior Journalists in the team will be expected to work some evenings and weekends to help us deliver always on News coverage on iPlayer.

Are you the right candidate?

The successful candidate should have:-

  • A thorough understanding of analytics; how audiences consume video on streaming platforms and the target audiences for News content on iPlayer.
  • Knowledge of compliance procedures, Editorial Policy and media law considerations for journalistic content on iPlayer.
  • Proven ability to edit video, with demonstrable knowledge of BBC News’ tools and techniques to create video (TV and Digital Video) output.
  • Understanding of video tooling, including FCP X and tools used for BBC News’ workflows including Jupiter, Silver and our online offer including CPS, Castaway, and iBroadcast.
  • Willingness to work inside a multi-disciplinary team, in an agile, sprint-led way, in a constantly developing and adapting environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of being a team player, able to articulate to others why change is needed.
  • Capability to juggle competing editorial demands.
