Introduction

Global Journalism is a key team within BBC World Service Languages. It provides high quality journalism and production, making text, video and social content that drives reach and engages audiences worldwide. Our core mission is to offer content to language services that enables them to cover and explain the world to their audiences, focusing on content that will grow those audiences.

The Short video team sits within our department and provides must-watch quick turnaround social and on-site video to World Service language services and BBC News. This could be viral video, a breaking news moment, a social cut-down of an investigation, or just beautiful footage that unveils the world around us. The team has grown audiences through a daily offer of videos which grab attention - turned around fast.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Journalist with strong editorial judgment, a rich background in digital video, and a keen eye for what makes a video overperform on TikTok, Instagram, and other social platforms. We are seeking a motivated Senior Journalist who stays on top of social media video trends, has a sharp eye for spotting viral stories, and brings solid editing skills to guide producers. This role requires understanding of the BBC's language services, the ability to sub copy, experience in FCP or other video editing software, and the confidence to sign off on content quickly. Candidates should have some experience using social media listening and monitoring tools to identify emerging trends and inform video commissioning, ensuring our content remains timely, relevant, and highly engaging.

Main Responsibilities

  • Research and pitch fresh, on-trend and viral video ideas which meet the expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC editorial guidelines.
  • Produce your own videos - from ideation to distribution to the BBC's 42 language services
  • Cover early, late or mid shifts.
  • Stay up to date with the latest editing trends in short video production and be proficient in using FCP or other editing software
  • Be aware of social video trends and proactively stay across the news agenda.
  • Use social media listening and monitoring tools to identify emerging trends
  • Use monitoring tools to stay across WS language services' websites, IG, TikTok, YouTube and FB accounts to spot overperforming stories that can be shared with the wider audience.
  • Write clear scripts, and proactively stay up to date with style changes, verification processes, copyright, legal and editorial issues.
  • Guide colleagues who you may team up with through processes that ensure our journalism is the best it can be in terms of accuracy, verification, impartiality, editorial policy and legal stance.
  • Meet tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Be able to evaluate and choose experts within a field, being mindful of our reputation and commitment to impartiality.

Are you the right candidate?

  • We are a positive, enthusiastic team, closely following short video trends and always developing new ways to reach our global audiences across the BBC's 42 WS language services and so you will be self-driven to succeed bringing lots of your own enthusiasm.
  • You will have a high standard of editorial judgment, scripting and editing ability based on substantial digital video journalism experience with a major media outlet. In addition:
  • Be on top of social media video trends, have a sharp eye for spotting viral stories that will resonate well with WSL audiences.
  • Have strong FCP/Premier Pro editing skills and will be well-versed at scripting and editing short video.
  • Have some experience in using social listening and monitoring tools for discovering overperforming video content.
  • Know how to maximise opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent and feel comfortable managing resources and technical facilities.
  • Be able to flex and adapt to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities.
  • You'll be a strong planner and be able to prioritise activities taking into account relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
  • You'll be a journalist with demonstrable commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit us.
