Job Introduction
The BBC News website is one of the world's largest and most popular sites. It attracts millions of readers every day and we lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on the biggest events happening around the world.
Our aim is to tell and break important business stories in a way that non-business specialists understand. We aim to always make it clear why a story is important and how it could impact readers and their lives.

Main Responsibilities

  • We are looking for an experienced business journalist with proven editorial judgement who will both write stories for the website and regularly run the news desk, deciding which stories to write, briefing reporters and editing.
  • You will be confident in running a news desk, be able to stay calm under pressure and make sensible editorial decisions quickly.
  • You must have clear proven communication skills as you will liaise closely with teams across the BBC, including senior website and broadcast editors and will need to give journalists detailed briefs to deliver on stories.
  • You will be an excellent sub editor with an eye for detail and clickable headlines.
  • It's a fun and varied job, where you'll write, report and edit a huge range of stories from straight news to analysis, features and live page posts.
  • You could be covering anything from the latest interest rate decision, to a drop in the price of cheese, to share and bond price movements to how working from home is becoming less common.
  • You must know how to read and make sense of company results and financial market movements, and read a dense economic report to pick out a strong top line which will resonate with a non-business specialist.
  • Much of this will need to be done at pace, getting the first draft of important stories written and published in minutes.
  • You will be expected to come up with original ideas for stories as well as how to treat them and suggest and carry out interviews with relevant people to make our business stories distinctive.
  • You should enjoy writing and be able to write with flair bringing subjects - which some readers may find dull - to life.
  • The job will involve working four 10-hour shifts a week including early mornings from 6am and late evenings until 0030 as well as Sundays.

Are you the right Candidate?

  • Excellent and demonstrable knowledge of business and economics in the UK and globally.
  • At least five years' experience of writing and editing fast-paced, breaking business news for digital audiences with attention to accuracy, context and tone.
  • Proven ability to cut through jargon, and make complex stories appealing and understandable to a broad business audience.
  • Experience of writing in a variety of formats to tight deadlines from breaking news and explainers to live page posts and analysis.
  • Proven ability to come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences.
  • Excellent editorial judgement and understanding of the BBC's editorial values.

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
