Job summary

A leading retail technology firm in Hereford is looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer. This role plays a pivotal part in maintaining and evolving infrastructure for online retail. With a focus on project delivery (80% of the time), you'll ensure a secure and scalable environment. Candidates should have expertise in firewalls, Windows Server, virtualization, and be motivated to drive best practices across the organization. Working closely with stakeholders, you'll influence infrastructure standards and participate in modernization initiatives.

Qualifications

• Proficient in configuring and managing firewalls and core routing/switching.
• Experience with Windows Server and End User Computing environments.
• Familiarity with Identity & Access Management technologies.
• Knowledge of VMware, GCP, and virtualisation best practices.

The Role Scope

As Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will operate as a senior technical authority within Tech Operations.

Your focus will be on ensuring our infrastructure remains secure, scalable and high-performing, while driving forward modernisation initiatives aligned to our architecture roadmap.

You’ll collaborate closely with the Infrastructure Team Lead, Head of Tech Operations and wider technology stakeholders, acting as a senior escalation point and contributing to best-in-class infrastructure standards across the business.

Role Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the definition of infrastructure principles and technical standards
• Ensure solutions align to architectural direction and long-term scalability
• Evaluate emerging technologies to support future capability
• Lead or contribute to enterprise-scale infrastructure projects
• Design and implement secure, resilient solutions
• Drive documentation and best practice across the environment
• Support ongoing infrastructure transformation initiatives
• Act as a senior escalation point for complex 2nd/3rd line issues
• Support network, server, identity and virtualisation environments
• Maintain system performance, availability and security
• Participate in an on‑call rota
• Mentor and support junior engineers
• Promote continuous improvement and knowledge sharing
• Create alignment across technical stakeholders

About You

• Firewall expertise and core routing/switching (Junos Cli, Juniper, OSPF, BGP, VLANs).
• Windows Server & End User Computing.
• Identity & Access Management (AD, Entra and Okta).
• Virtualisation (VMware & GCP).
• EDM/MDM (Intune, SCCM and IRU).
• Backup solutions (VMware backup products eg. Veeam, IDPA).
• PowerShell scripting and API experience.
• Strong understanding of IT best practice
• Driving license required
• Terraform, Linux administration, Hyperconverged Infrastructure, Cisco Meraki, Google Workspace.
