Job summary

MandM is seeking an Engineering Team Lead for our mobile team in Hereford. You will lead, mentor, and influence a multidisciplinary engineering group, blending hands-on leadership with mobile architecture expertise and product-focused execution to deliver high-value features to our users.

Qualifications

• Team leadership with formal 1:1 coaching and psychological safety.
• Mobile app architecture expertise (Flutter) and API design standards.
• Product-led mindset prioritising user value and iterative releases.
• Strong foundations in OOP/SOLID, security and GDPR compliance.
• Experience with CMS/tools or AI-assisted development is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Line manage, mentor, and coach an engineering squad (Senior roles mentioned).
• Conduct regular 1:1s, set technical direction, foster psychological safety.
• Champion personal development and capability growth within the team.
• Drive mobile application architecture and systems design decisions (Flutter, APIs).
• Establish design standards and document architectural decisions (ADRs, RFCs).
• Lead code reviews and enforce modern development standards (OOP/SOLID).
• Embed security and GDPR controls, promote AI-assisted tooling.
• Foster customer-centric delivery and early value, promote test-and-learn culture.
• Collaborate with wider engineering leadership to optimise processes.

The Role Scope

As the Engineering Team Lead for our Mobile team, you will act as the leader, mentor, and facilitator for a multidisciplinary engineering group. Reporting to the Staff Engineer, you will blend hands-on people leadership with mobile architecture expertise and product-focused execution to continuously deliver high-value features to our users.

Role key responsibilities:

• Line manage, mentor, and coach a squad of engineers (Senior Software Engineer, Senior Backend Engineer, Test Engineer.
• Conduct regular formal 1:1s, set clear technical direction, and foster an environment of psychological safety.
• Champion personal development, identify capability gaps, and empower team members to collaborate and build consensus.
• Drive mobile application architecture and systems design decisions (working with Flutter, Firebase, Third-Party Integrations, and Public APIs).
• Establish design standards and document architectural decisions using ADRs, RFCs, and KDDs.
• Lead code reviews, enforce modern development standards (OOP, SOLID), embed security and GDPR controls, and promote the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools.
• Drive a customer-centric mindset, championing early value delivery and a "test and learn" engineering culture.
• Assess complex technical trade-offs, articulate architectural value to stakeholders, and align delivery with product goals.
• Collaborate horizontally across the wider engineering leadership group to optimise development and deployment processes.

About you

What we’re looking for

• Team Leadership: Proven experience line managing engineers, conducting formal 1:1s, providing structured coaching, and establishing psychological safety.
• Mobile Architecture & Systems Design: Hands-on expertise in mobile app architecture (Flutter preferred), public APIs, third-party integrations, and defining technical standards (ADRs/RFCs).
• Product-Led Mindset: A strong customer-centric focus, prioritising user value, iterative release cycles, and evaluating architectural trade-offs against business goals.
• Technical Foundations: Deep understanding of OOP/SOLID principles, code review standards, databases, Git/GitLab/GitHub workflows, and security/GDPR compliance.
• Technical Nice-to-Haves: Exposure to tools like Bloomreach, Algolia, Contentstack (or equivalent CMS), Google Tag Manager (GTM) or AI pair-programming workflows.
