The role:

Senior Infrastructure Engineers play a critical role in the success of providing our community with a performant, reliable platform and are called upon to design and support the right solutions for the business needs. Beyond providing high standards of service and general support, they must effectively work in a consultative role for each project to make recommendations on the appropriate solution, to improve performance of the platform and to plan proactively for both internal and user inspired changes and growth.

The role requires a high degree of self-management, proactivity and positivity with regard to delivering internal objectives, personal accountability, good communication and technology acumen. Continual knowledge transfer, training and mentoring of less knowledgeable staff is expected.

As a senior engineer, a higher level of technical knowledge is required, with a need to keep up to date on new tools and techniques, future technical roadmap recommendations and deputising for your manager.

What you'll be doing:

  • Ensure our infrastructure remains available, secure, and reliable for end users and the SJP community.
  • Complete necessary maintenance activities within required timeframes, in accordance with policies and standards.
  • Resolution of incidents in line with target SLAs - particularly complex issues.
  • Maintenance of desktop build and support to the 2nd line team for complex desktop issues.
  • Software package maintenance.
  • Work collaboratively with members of Technology Operations, particularly Cloud Ops Engineers, Cyber, Network Engineers and other areas such as Solution Architects, Application Developers and Project teams to design the infrastructure for applications.
  • To assess and deliver change for projects (within the Technology Operations division and the wider business, particularly complex change).
  • To provide guidance and support to other members of the team, enabling their technical development.
  • Perform operational activities as required within the estate (incident resolution and maintenance).
  • Recommend and deliver cost savings and cost-effective solutions.
  • To maintain the cybersecurity stance of our IT infrastructure.
  • Display a high understanding of Microsoft & Azure platforms.
  • Identify areas for automation and deliver automated functions.
  • Act as a consultant for the technology area for complex problems and issues to help resolve incidents for challenging requirements.
  • Keep up to date with Microsoft applications and tools, enabling informed recommendations for adoption and continuous service improvements as the platform evolves.

A collaborative and personal team player, who can confidently engage with colleagues across Technology Operations.

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrate substantive experience of Azure practical experience building and maintaining varying Azure workloads/services within a large enterprise.
  • Extensive experience of supporting an enterprise infrastructure including networks, firewalls, load balancing and Active Directory.
  • Experience leading or working within hybrid-cloud enterprise environments, with expertise in security and backup applications and services in a regulated setting.
  • Exposure to demonstrating a successful balance between security, access control, and auditing capabilities in the cloud.
  • Understanding of High-Availability and Disaster recovery-based workloads.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator (AZ-104) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge or experience identifying automation opportunities and using monitoring tools for proactive issue resolution.

Special Requirements:

  • Liaising with external third parties, particularly Microsoft.
  • Providing support for infrastructure changes and maintenance out of core hours.
  • Potential for 24/7 on-call support (Qualifies for additional payment).
