Job summary

Relation is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to build next-generation generative and predictive models of cellular behaviour, with a focus on high-content imaging. You will curate imaging datasets, design robust evaluations, and interpret model behaviour in collaboration with wet lab teams.

The role sits in a matrixed, interdisciplinary environment, leveraging multi-omics and advanced computational infrastructure to drive research iteration and impactful therapies.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent industry experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer vision, biomedical engineering, or related field.
• Strong fluency with high-content imaging modalities including cell painting and brightfield; knowledge of data quality and artefacts.
• Working knowledge of deep learning approaches to imaging to reason about model behavior and evaluation.
• Experience designing or contributing to evaluation frameworks for ML models, ideally with imaging data.
• Strong Python data-science stack (numpy, pandas/polars, scikit-learn, PyTorch).
• Familiarity with terabyte-scale imaging data and standard scientific formats.
• Strong biological grounding to partner with wet lab scientists.
• Bonus: familiarity with CellProfiler, scikit-image, ImageJ/Fiji for QC; large public cell painting datasets; publications.

Responsibilities

• Curate training-ready imaging datasets across cell painting and brightfield assays.
• Drive evaluation design for imaging modalities in partnership with ML and data scientists.
• Surface what models learn about cellular morphology and feed findings into modelling decisions.
• Partner with wet lab assay teams from plate design through data delivery.
• Contribute to multi-modal evaluation linking imaging readouts to single-cell and perturbation data.
• Communicate methodology and findings clearly across the computational team.
• Track developments in foundation models for biological imaging and apply relevant advances.
