Tenure: Fixed-term contract until 31st March 2026 with possibility of extension.

Role & Responsibilities

Reporting in our Nature Recovery Land Manager, you'll assist with nature conservation projects on London Wildlife Trust's portfolio of nature reserves in south-east Hillingdon, and engaging the local community, as part of a funded project. This will involve supervising sessional staff, trainees and volunteers, and coordinating the work of contractors, whilst ensuring that all such work is undertaken in line with site management plans and that works are delivered in a safe manner.

You'll lead volunteer and staff workdays, undertaking all aspects of practical nature reserve management, including assisting at two country parks run by London Borough of Hillingdon. You'll also be responsible for training trainees and volunteers in land management techniques, and planning & delivering community engagement activities such as walks and talks to encourage a wider range of people to get involved with volunteering at London Wildlife Trust. Whilst it is envisaged that this post will primarily involve practical work, some administrative work will be required.

  • Act as a visible and active presence across nature reserves in south-west Hillingdon, building strong relationships with volunteers, local partners, and stakeholders.
  • Lead and deliver practical conservation work, supervising volunteers, trainees, and corporate groups on habitat management tasks.
  • Oversee project delivery, liaising with key funders and partners such as BA and the London Borough of Hillingdon, and reporting on progress and finances.
  • Deliver engaging community sessions, guided walks, and events to encourage wider public involvement in conservation.
  • Support volunteer development and training, helping to build a strong and active volunteer network.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety across all sites, including tools and vehicle upkeep, and risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with other Trust teams to deliver educational activities, corporate volunteering days, and promotional content.
  • Contribute to conservation monitoring, species and habitat surveys, and assist with funding bids and project development.

Our ideal Senior Hillingdon Ranger:

  • Full and valid UK driving licence.
  • Demonstrable experience of planning and delivering practical conservation work on nature reserves.
  • Understanding of woodland and meadow management practises and techniques.
  • Reasonable identification skills for a range of relevant taxa, and some knowledge of standard biological recording techniques.
  • Experience of planning and delivering community engagement activities (e.g., guided walks and talks), involving a range of people from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Closing Date: 9am 28th April 2025

Interviews: Are scheduled to take place on 12th May and reasonable adjustments will be offered to all candidates including the choice to meet online or in-person.
