Job summary

Calderdale Council is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead a small design team within our Strategic Infrastructure Service. This role focuses on delivering highway safety improvements, sustainable transport, and public realm enhancements that benefit Calderdale's residents, businesses and visitors.

Working in the Traffic Engineering Team, you will shape the future of the highway network by delivering schemes from concept to implementation.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and local authority procedures.

  • Collaborate with internal services, developers, consultants and external stakeholders.
  • Commission and coordinate the work of consultants, contractors and specialists.
  • Supervise and mentor trainees and other staff.

We're seeking a Senior Engineer to lead a small design team within our Strategic Infrastructure Service. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in delivering highway safety improvements, sustainable transport initiatives, and public realm enhancements supporting Calderdale's residents, businesses and visitors.

Working at the heart of our Traffic Engineering Team, you'll help shape the future of the highway network by leading the design and delivery of schemes that improve road safety, support economic growth, and contribute to wider transport and environmental objectives.

About the Team

The Traffic Engineering Team is responsible for developing and delivering highway safety and traffic management solutions across Calderdale. Our work ranges from highway improvement and sustainable transport projects to public realm schemes and developer-funded highway works.

As part of the team, you'll contribute to the delivery of projects funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) programme (and its replacement), as well as a growing portfolio of highway and infrastructure projects.

Your key responsibilities and duties will include
  • Leading and supporting a team of Engineers in the design and delivery of highway and traffic engineering projects, managing work programmes, budgets, estimates and project delivery.
  • Prepare design solutions and develop innovative and practical highway safety and improvement schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with current legislation, design standards and Council policies.
  • Provide technical advice to elected Members, colleagues and members of the public.
  • Work collaboratively with internal services, developers, consultants and external stakeholders.
  • Commission and co-ordinate the work of consultants, contractors and specialist providers.
  • Supervise and mentor trainees and other staff.
What We're Looking for:
  • Proven experience leading or supervising technical teams.
  • Strong experience in highway design and traffic engineering.
  • A strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and local authority procedures.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience delivering engineering projects from concept through to implementation.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and with external partners.
  • Experience in delivering Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) would be advantageous.
