Job summary

WSP in Gloucester is seeking a Senior Highways Engineer to lead high-quality highway designs across multidisciplinary projects, ensuring delivery to programme, budget and standards. You will work with the Principal Highways Engineer and provide guidance to a team of engineers and technicians.

Qualifications

• A passion for design and a drive to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions.
• A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design environment.
• Chartered Engineer preferred or working towards IEng or CEng status with a relevant professional institution.
• Experience in multidisciplinary highway design across different project stages.
• Technical knowledge in road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage systems, road restraint systems, and traffic signs/road markings.
• Familiarity with relevant design standards including DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, and Local Authority guidance, including experience preparing drawings for Technical Approvals and Departures from Standards.
• Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.
• Understanding of Designer’s Duties under CDM regulations.

• Prepare and review design documentation, drawings, reports, and technical submissions.
• Work across a portfolio of varied multi‑disciplinary projects simultaneously.
• Coordinate with engineering and technician resources to deliver work packages effectively.
• Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.
• Support site‑based activities on an ad hoc basis, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.
