Qualifications

  • Chartered status and degree in Building Surveying or related field.

The Senior Heritage Building Surveyor's Role

As the successful Senior Heritage Building Surveyor, you will be responsible for leading and managing complex heritage projects from inception through to completion. You will play a key role in the preparation of heritage impact assessments, listed building consents, and technical reporting, while also acting as a key liaison between clients, contractors, and heritage bodies.

Working across high-profile sites-from world-class museums to royal landmarks-you'll bring deep heritage expertise to each stage of the project, ensuring historical integrity is preserved while modern requirements are met.

You'll also be involved in client relationship management, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to the overall growth of the heritage service offering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and monitor complex heritage schemes
  • Prepare and oversee listed building consents and impact assessments
  • Deliver technical surveys and reports in line with conservation standards
  • Act as primary client contact and attend stakeholder meetings
  • Ensure programme and budgetary targets are met
  • Recognise and pursue new business opportunities in the heritage sector
  • Provide mentoring and support to junior members of the team

The Successful Senior Heritage Building Surveyor Will Have

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Building Surveying or conservation-related field
  • Chartered (RICS or equivalent) - ideally with conservation accreditation
  • IHBC membership or working towards it (desirable)

Experience and Attributes:

  • Significant experience working on Grade I listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments
  • Strong understanding of heritage and planning legislation
  • Track record of delivering heritage projects within occupied and sensitive sites
  • Proficient in administering building contracts, particularly NEC PSC
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative and self-motivated, with a passion for historic architecture
