Job summary
Curtiss-Wright is seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to join our Letchworth team in the UK. You will lead the design and development of rugged VPX-based computer systems and video products, from concept to production, interfacing with software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams.
The role requires degree-level qualifications and extensive experience in embedded systems, VPX, PCIe, EMC testing, and production support.
Qualifications
- Degree or higher in a relevant technical subject.
- Experience in embedded systems and VPX PC card integration.
- Familiar with high-end Intel Xeon and NXP VPX SBCs.
- Experience in schematic design with ORCAD/Altium.
- Knowledge of PCIe interfaces, DC-DC PSU design, EMC standards.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop ruggedised VPX computer systems or video products.
- Maintain and obsolescence manage existing products.
- Ensure qualification tests (temperature, vibration, EMC) pass.
- Attend and contribute to design reviews.
- Guide junior colleagues in technical matters.
- Support production engineering for cost-effective manufacturing.

We are looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to join our Letchworth UK Team!
Our Curtiss Wright Avionics, Video and Systems unit with our HQ based in our state-of-the-art facility at Bournemouth Airport is looking for a Sr Hardware Engineer to join the design team in our Letchworth office. You will be responsible for implementing all aspects of the electronic design and development process, from initial concept through to the completion of sealed data packs. You will also liaise with software engineers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing and sales to ensure product is fit for purpose, cost effective and reliable.

Participate individually and as part of an integrated project team in the design of the Company’s products.
Design and develop ruggedised computer system (VPX based) or video products.
Maintain the existing product line including obsolescence management, periodic circuit uplift and production support.
Take responsibility for ensuring allocated qualification tests (Temperature, vibration, EMC to name just a few) are completed successfully, both in-house and at external test houses.
To attend and actively contribute to the effective operation of applicable design reviews.
To support and guide junior colleagues in technical matters.
To undertake new technology evaluation and introduction in product designs
To accept technical responsibility for allocated design tasks
To assist Production Engineering in the introduction of equipment into manufacture in a cost effective and timely manner
May represent the Hardware function internally and externally.
Infrequent UK and international travel as required.
Educated to Degree/HND level in an appropriate technical subject.
Relevant experience in embedded systems (Specifically at Letchworth, integration of VPX PC cards), digital and analogue design.
Familiar with high end Intel Xeons & NXP Power-PC VPX single board computers
Familiar with Schematic design using ORCAD/Altium or similar package.
Familiar with PCIe interface operation and design.
Familiar with DC-DC PSU design.
Familiar with Design for EMC including MIL Spec. Ruggedized Video Monitors.
Flexible and able to complete Environmental Testing to standards such as RTCA/DO-160/MIL810/MIL461, including detailed test specification and report writing.
Ability to fault find down to a board level.
Experience working closely with or in production is advantageous.
Experience within an aerospace environment is advantageous.
