Job summary

MDA Space is seeking a Senior Hardware Design Engineer to contribute to high‑reliability satellite payloads and space hardware development. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to design, test and deliver FPGA/ASIC based hardware for various orbits, ensuring robust performance in demanding space environments.

The role requires extensive hardware design experience, HDI PCBs, RF and power electronics knowledge, and proficiency with circuit design tools.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in a hardware product design role, Space or high-reliability sector.
• Experience in designing and manufacturing complex, multi-layer PCBs for high-reliability applications.
• Knowledge of circuit design, PCB design and simulation tools; power supply layout techniques.

Responsibilities

• Develop FPGA/ASIC based satellite telecom payloads in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Manage hardware development and manufacturing activities across the lifecycle.
• Lead design, testing, verification and documentation of hardware products.

We’re on the hunt for a Senior Hardware Design Engineer.

MDA’s international footprint in the UK creates opportunities to work with some of the most exciting space industrial players in the country. Delivering all three business area capabilities in Geointelligence, Robotics & Space Operations, and Satellite Systems, our UK team provides support to our European-based customers while specializing in the development of advanced space sensors for exploration missions as well as space-based communication technology. Responsibilities

• Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers developing FPGA/ ASIC based satellite telecommunication payloads for a variety of orbits
• Management of complex Hardware development and manufacturing activities
• Responsible throughout the Hardware product development lifecycle for the specification, design and testing
• Detailed circuit design including schematic capture, component selection and electronic simulation
• Engineering analysis and documentation (Derating, Worst Case, Reliability, Radiation, EMI/EMC Analysis, FMECA, Power Budget)
• Supporting Hardware/Software/System integration, test, validation and qualification
• Directing in-house and 3rd party PCB layout design teams
• Deliver prototype and product quality manufacturing packages
• Playing an active role in the leadership of the team

Required Skills And Qualifications

• 10+ years’ experience in a hardware product design role, in the Space or an equivalent High reliability sector
• Experience in the design and manufacture of complex circuits and multi-layer (10+) HDI PCBs for high reliability applications
• Experience of circuit and PCB design and simulation tools
• Knowledge of power supply design and layout techniques
• Knowledge of high speed digital design and Serdes interconnects
• Specialist knowledge in any of the following areas would be advantageous:
• Knowledge of LEO/GEO communications payloads
• High reliability design and analysis (Space, Military, Automotive, etc)
• RF design and validation
• Electronic circuitry radiation effects and mitigation techniques
• DC/DC power supply design
• Knowledge of environmental, thermal, safety and EMI/EMC standards
• Practical use of scripting languages Tcl/Python/Perl etc
