About the role
Balfour Beatty is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join their Power T&D team in Scotland. This site-based role is located in The Isle of Skye.
Role purpose:
- Collaborate with project teams, designers, and subcontractors during the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works aligned with project objectives.
- Take responsibility for design delivery and suitability across Power T&D construction projects, focusing on geotechnical aspects.
- Provide advice on the constructability and sequencing of civil and temporary works designs for Power T&D projects.
- Offer geotechnical support across various PT&D workstreams.
- Participate in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects alongside team leads.

What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:
- Represent the design team on site, ensuring safe and timely construction of geotechnical and civil works.
- Design and coordinate foundation and geotechnical works from feasibility to detail design and scheme close, ensuring compliance with schedule, budget, and quality standards.
- Ensure high-quality and timely delivery of designs, reports, calculations, and drawings in accordance with client and national standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
- Understand client requirements, including implicit needs, and contribute to pricing and design solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct site surveys, desktop assessments, foundation capacity checks, and geotechnical risk assessments, interpreting ground investigation data.
- Specify and oversee ground investigations and testing, soil and rock logging, and report on piling and other works.
- Assess geological conditions on-site to inform engineering decisions.
- Support tender preparations with design volumes and quantities to meet contract requirements.
- Supervise testing and installation activities to verify design suitability and quality.
- Work closely with project teams to align objectives and ensure appropriate work practices.
- Coordinate with personnel to optimize installation procedures and inspect geotechnical works.
- Implement 'Safety by Design' principles, ensuring health and safety regulations are followed in design activities.
- Analyze contract documents to interpret client and consultant intentions accurately.
- Communicate with business units, clients, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure progress and quality.
- Assist in training new designers and trainees.
- Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and other legal requirements related to the team's design outputs.
Who we're looking for
Skills Required:
- Degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or equivalent, with formal training.
- Membership with ICE or Geol Soc, working towards Chartered Engineer status.
- Experience in soil and rock logging/testing per EC7, BS5930, BS1377.
- Post-graduate experience in civil engineering.
- Experience supervising sub-consultants or subcontractors.
- Proven civil engineering design experience.
- Experience managing civil or geotechnical design projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, CAD.
- Extensive geotechnical design experience.
