Job summary

Pontoon is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join a specialist team delivering major offshore and onshore cable infrastructure projects in the UK. The role focuses on geotechnical data, technical assurance, and collaboration with field teams, consultants, contractors and stakeholders to support design, with no final technical decisions required.

The position covers two projects simultaneously, requiring experience managing multiple priorities and regular site work (2–4 days per week).

Qualifications

• Strong onshore geotechnical engineering experience with practical knowledge of ground investigations.
• Experience interpreting geotechnical data and informing design decisions.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical assurance of onshore geotechnical surveys and data.
• Work with field teams undertaking boreholes, trial pits and other ground investigations.
• Review and interpret geotechnical data and laboratory testing results.
• Provide geotechnical input into submarine cable, cable route and substation design.
• Review survey information, reports and contractor/consultant deliverables.
• Work closely with consultants, contractors, stakeholders and project teams.
• Identify issues and provide practical technical recommendations and suggestions.
• Support lessons learned and improvements across projects.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join a specialist team delivering major offshore and onshore cable infrastructure projects.

The role will focus on geotechnical data and technical assurance, representing the client and working closely with field teams, consultants, contractors and wider project stakeholders. You will provide technical input and suggestions to support cable and substation design, rather than being responsible for final technical decisions.

The role will cover two projects simultaneously, so experience managing multiple projects and competing priorities is important.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical assurance of onshore geotechnical surveys and data.
• Work with field teams undertaking boreholes, trial pits and other ground investigations.
• Review and interpret geotechnical data and laboratory testing results.
• Provide geotechnical input into submarine cable, cable route and substation design.
• Review survey information, reports and contractor/consultant deliverables.
• Work closely with consultants, contractors, stakeholders and project teams.
• Support the client team in ensuring geotechnical information is accurate, complete and suitable for project requirements.
• Identify issues and provide practical technical recommendations and suggestions.
• Support lessons learned, processes and improvements across projects.

Experience & Skills

• Strong onshore geotechnical engineering experience with practical knowledge of ground investigations.
• Good understanding of boreholes, trial pits, sampling and laboratory testing.
• Experience interpreting geotechnical data and understanding how it informs engineering and infrastructure design.
• Experience working on multiple projects at the same time.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work with field teams, consultants, contractors and wider stakeholders.
• Experience in offshore, marine, cable or energy infrastructure would be beneficial, but HVDC experience is not essential.
• Experience in a client-side, technical assurance or data assurance role.
• Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential.
• Must be willing to undertake regular site/field work, potentially 2-4 days per week during survey periods.
• Relevant construction/site qualification or accreditation required for working on construction sites; specific requirement to be confirmed.

Location & Travel

Initial field surveys are expected to commence around October, with approximately four months of field activity followed by laboratory/data-focused work.

Fieldwork is initially expected in North Wales, followed by locations along the East Coast, including the Lincolnshire area.

The role will require regular travel to site and flexibility to support project requirements.
