Job Description

Following its recent acquisition by SLR, Wardell Armstrong now forms part of a leading global environmental and sustainability consultancy working on projects across the world from over 100 offices. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior/Principal Geotechnical and/or Mining Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have between 5 to 8 years of post-qualification experience, preferably in consultancy, across ground investigation, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, and mining (desirable but not essential).

Overview of team / business area .

With an industry leading and award-winning ground engineering team of chartered geologists, engineers and environmental scientists, together with our Specialists in Land Contamination (SiLC), we support projects from feasibility, through planning and on to successful completion.

The role

Project work will be varied, and there will be a strong focus on renewable energy, infrastructure and residential schemes as well as other commercial development projects. Project work will be within Wales and the Southwest and occasionally further afield within the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing ground engineering projects (commensurate with experience), assisting team leads with managing resource allocation and financial budgets, addressing any client feedback and ensuring effective communications on all projects.
  • Designing and supervising ground investigations utilising a range of techniques and ensuring that surveys are being carried out to the required standards by all staff.
  • Experience of preparing a wide range of technical reports including Desk Studies, Ground Investigation Reports, Geotechnical Design Reports, Slope Stability Assessments, Coal Mining Risk Assessments, Earthworks Strategies and Compaction Specifications etc.
  • Design and supervising of earthworks and compaction specifications.
  • Assist the team leads with the preparation of proposals.
  • Be an active member of the ground engineering team, working collaboratively with the wider team and acting as a mentor for junior staff members.

About you

  • Experience of managing projects to completion and reporting to the standards required by planning authorities, Mining Remediation Authority, Natural Resources Wales, Environment Agency and other similar bodies.
  • Experience of preparing a wide range of technical reports.
  • Experience of applying for Mining Remediation Authority licenses and permits.
  • Proficient at designing ground investigations and preparing bills of quantities.
  • Competent at supervising ground investigations and earthworks.
  • Experience of supervising ground stabilisation such as drilling and grouting mine workings would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Good knowledge of relevant UK and European legislation, policy and guidance, including BS5930, and Euro Code 7.
  • Experience of networking events or willingness to participate in such events.
  • SSSTS, CSCS and PTS qualified (Desirable but not essential).
  • A full UK driving licence essential and access to own car is essential.
