Job summary

Surrey Police & Sussex Police in the UK seek a Deputy Firearms and Explosives Licensing Manager to lead the Firearms and Explosives Licensing Unit across both forces. You will oversee licensing decisions, mentor a skilled team and exercise delegated authority for safeguarding communities.

The role requires extensive knowledge of firearms and explosives law, strong leadership, communication and court-trial capabilities, with duties including on-call work and collaboration across agencies.

Qualifications

  • A level or equivalent experience or management experience.
  • Deep knowledge of Firearms and Explosives legislation, guidance and case law.
  • Ability to manage complex cases and lead a regional licensing unit.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Firearms and Explosives Licensing Officers and manage recruitment and performance.
  • Make and review licensing decisions on certificates.
  • Apply risk-based decision making to assess threats and ensure compliance.
  • Produce robust reports and recommendations for legal scrutiny.
  • Provide expert guidance to colleagues and partner agencies on legislation and policy.
  • Represent the Chief Constables in court and other legal proceedings.
  • Support on-call duties and incident response when required.
