Job description

Senior Financial Accountant - Projects (12 month FTC)

Practice Group / Department:
Financial Controller - NewcastleJob Description

We're Norton Rose Fulbright - a global law firm with over 50 offices and 7,000 employees worldwide. We provide the world's preeminent corporations and financial institutions with a full business law service. At Norton Rose Fulbright, our strategy and our culture are closely entwined. We know that our expansion will mean little unless it is underpinned by truly global collaboration and we understand that pioneering work only takes place when our people have room to move and think beyond boundaries. As well as the relevant skills and experience, we're looking for people who are innovative, commercial and value the work that they do.

The Role

The role is based in Norton Rose Fulbright's Newcastle office and suits a qualified accountant who has experience with intercompany accounting across a multinational group and enjoys project based work. This position is for a 12 month fixed-term contract.

Reporting to the Financial Controller, and part of a service driven team with 5 other financial accountants, the role will be responsible for the successful delivery of an intercompany reconciliation and data cleanse project across EMEA's 18 offices. In addition there are opportunities to get involved in other projects.

The intercompany and interoffice balances have been building up over a number of years, with no agreed process for paying intercompany balances. Design work has been completed to better understand the issues, and what the solution is for addressing (both historical balances and going forward). This work identified this role as critical for delivering changes required to (i) manage the tax risk of large intercompany balances and (ii) tidy up the current intercompany balances in advance of a new finance system being implemented.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reconciling intercompany balances across all EMEA offices
  • Analyse, manage and resolve intercompany mismatches
  • Posting journals to reconcile and clear intercompany balances across all EMEA offices
  • Develop a reporting structure to track and report on progress
  • Settling intercompany balances (through physical cash transfers or via the "internal bank")
  • Implement NRF EMEA's new approach for intercompany accounting, in doing so make changes from issues arising
In addition to the main purpose of the role above, there may be opportunities to get involved in other projects at Norton Rose Fulbright.

In undertaking the above activities, you are expected to:
  • Work as part of the Newcastle based Financial Accounting team whilst developing effective working relationships with the wider UK finance community as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with accounting teams in non-UK offices to be able to efficiently reconcile intercompany balances.
Skills and Experience Required

The individual should:
  • Enjoy working independently, taking full ownership of deliverables
  • Be self-motivated and self-disciplined, passionate about meeting deadlines and process improvement
  • Have excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Be a good problem solver, methodical in approach and an "eye for detail"
  • Comfortable handling large amounts of data
Experience required:
  • Qualified accountant with experience of intercompany processes within a global organisation (essential)
  • SAP R3 system knowledge (desirable)
  • Strong Excel skills (essential)
  • Proven track record of working on projects, including managing own time effectively and delivering against deadlines (preferred)
  • Planning and project management skills (preferred)
  • Working within a large, process driven business (preferred)
