Uncrewed Systems Field Applications Engineer

Teledyne Marine -Vehicles is a member of a group of leading-edge undersea technology companies that have been assembled under the Teledyne Marine umbrella. We include Teledyne Benthos, Teledyne Webb Research, and Teledyne OceanScience on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Teledyne Gavia in Iceland. Teledyne Marine Vehicles is seeking a UK based Field Applications Engineer to join our unified Field support team for Slocum glider and Gavia AUVs with a special focus on the UK Royal Navy. Duties include technical support for RN, other UK and other European users of Slocum gliders, Gavia AUVs, and APEX floats including testing, Slocum and Gavia training, customer AUV and glider piloting, conducting Onsite Sea Acceptance Testing and supporting sales as an uncrewed system SMEs through demonstrations, technical papers and other customer outreach.

Applicants must be willing to travel internationally and be capable of work on commercial and military seagoing vessels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Deliver Slocum and Gavia service and support
    • Answering technical inquiries from customers via website, email, text, phone, etc.
    • Travel to customer sites for testing and service and support as required
    • Conduct Slocum and Gavia training
    • Conduct Onsite Sea Acceptance Testing at customer locations
    • Conduct Slocum glider piloting and Gavia AUV operations in support of RN and other customers
  • Sales and Marketing Support
    • Deploy and operate gliders and AUVs at demonstrations & trials
    • Present technical papers and talks
    • Attend tradeshows and science meetings to advise on future of product enhancements / improvements
    • Gather customer interest and write application notes (use cases)
    • Onsite visits to customer locations

Qualifications/Requirements

Education/Experience

  • 10+ years of UK Royal Navy experience in the operations of unmanned systems including AUVs and gliders
  • Close connection to RN user communities in either mine countermeasures, diving, hydrography/oceanography
  • BS in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science or Oceanography and 2 – 4 years of experience showing ability to diagnose, mechanical, electrical and software issues and provide solutions on complex systems; or equivalent combination of education and military experience may be considered
  • Experience assembling equipment, and or repairing electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience with small boat, and seagoing experience on large vessels, preferred
  • Experience in operations of Gavia AUVs Slocum gliders including mission planning / execution and data analysis
  • Detailed knowledge of sonar systems and physical oceanography
  • Understanding of naval operations of unmanned systems
  • Ability to creatively solve customer problems and design solutions based on customer needs
  • Excellent communicator, both verbal and written, with strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to travel a minimum of 25% of the time, international and domestic
  • Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office products is essential: Excel, Word and Power Point

Preferred:

  • Candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, a UK security clearance
  • Previous experience using Salesforce or other Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool
  • Previous seagoing experience on vessels desired
  • Experience working closely with customers in sales, customer service, or technical capacity

  • Ability to handle and move equipment (up to 50 lbs.), at times long distances
  • Ability to move around in oceanographic vessels and small boats (ladders, tight spaces)
  • Able to work on offshore vessels
  • Ability to work in the field in adverse weather conditions and adverse working conditions
  • Occasional work at non-standard work hours or for stretches with only minimal sleep
  • This position requires periods of working behind a desk, performing tasks on computer
  • Significant periods of standing or walking throughout the facility to interface with other associates
  • Travel up to 25% of time via Air/Train/Boat/Automobile for up to 24 consecutive hours
