Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Estimator to join a leading civil engineering and building contractor based in Derby. Our client specialises in a wide range of projects, including industrial, energy, retail, commercial, and flood defence and water sectors. This role will be an office-based position in Derby, providing an exciting opportunity to contribute to large-scale projects while working with a highly skilled team.

The ideal candidate will come from a groundworks, civil, or utilities background, with a strong understanding of estimating practices and a proven track record of managing estimates for complex infrastructure and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for a variety of civil engineering and building projects across sectors such as industrial, energy, retail, commercial, and flood defence.
2. Review and evaluate tender documents, specifications, and drawings to produce accurate quantities and costings.
3. Work closely with project managers, engineers, and the senior leadership team to ensure estimates reflect the scope and requirements of each project.
4. Identify potential risks and opportunities during the estimation process, offering cost-effective solutions.
5. Prepare detailed bills of quantities, cost breakdowns, and tender submissions.
6. Support the procurement process by liaising with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive quotes.
7. Assist in the development of the project budget, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project requirements.
8. Maintain a database of historical cost data for reference in future projects.
9. Stay updated on the latest industry trends, materials, and methodologies to improve estimating accuracy and efficiency.
10. Contribute to internal reviews and post-tender meetings to ensure continuous improvement in estimating processes.

Ideal Candidate:

1. Strong background in groundworks, civil engineering, or utilities estimating.
2. 5+ years of experience in estimating for a civil engineering or building contractor.
3. Proven experience working on industrial, energy or civil engineering.
4. Familiarity with estimating software and Microsoft Office.
5. Excellent attention to detail with a strong understanding of costing practices.
6. Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
7. Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines.
8. Knowledge of construction contracts and procurement processes.
9. A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering) would be advantageous but not essential.
