Balfour Beatty has created iconic buildings and infrastructure worldwide over the past 115 years, redefining excellence and setting industry benchmarks with every project.

Alongside several consortium partners, Balfour Beatty has been selected by BP (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage. This project is a key part of plans to make Teesside the UK's first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Environmental Sustainability Advisor - Net Zero Teesside - Redcar to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside project at our new site in Redcar, Cleveland, on Teesside.

What you'll be doing
  • Provide advice and support to operational teams on environmental matters.
  • Maintain relationships with regulators, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Engage with local stakeholders.
  • Investigate and report incidents to the Environment and Sustainability Manager.
  • Ensure onsite compliance with environmental legislation and coach teams in applying controls and mitigations.
  • Support sustainability activities for the project.
  • Deliver value-adding environmental projects and ecological enhancements.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and subcontractors on environmental management and sustainability issues.
  • Produce and update environmental management plans and risk assessments.
  • Provide onsite advice on environmental management, compliance, and project-specific mitigation measures, including pollution control and ecology protection.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and support controls to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure implementation of environmental management systems on site.
  • Stay updated on standards and legislation; recommend changes as needed.
  • Deliver environmental training, toolbox talks, and onsite coaching.
  • Produce reports such as case studies, performance metrics, KPI reports, and lessons learned.
  • Support audit and assurance activities, including facilitating external audits.
  • Conduct regular compliance inspections.
  • Assist in developing KPIs and management reports.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Who we're looking for
  • Extensive experience in a relevant role within construction or major projects.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental management and sustainability issues.
  • Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or related field.
  • Practical knowledge of environmental legislation, ecology mitigation, licenses, and regulator interactions.
  • Understanding of ecological matters and environmental law.
  • Full driver’s license and willingness to travel.
  • Knowledge of construction operating environments.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • PIEMA or IEMA membership or relevant professional accreditation.
Desirable Requirements
  • Internal environmental auditor qualification.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
