Senior Environmental Health Officer

Our client is seeking a proactive and experienced Senior Environmental Health Officer to join their Environmental Health team. This role involves delivering high-quality environmental health services across residential and commercial sectors. You will report directly to the Team Manager and be responsible for supervising up to 10 staff members. You will also deputise for the Team Manager when required.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
Deliver the full range of duties relevant to the Environmental Health Section.
Ensure completion of service work programmes as set by the Team Manager.
Supervise and manage staff including Lead Officers, Environmental Health Officers, and Technical Officers or Assistants.
Staff Supervision and Performance
Allocate work, prioritise tasks, and monitor staff performance to meet legal and policy standards.
Act as the Team Manager’s deputy in their absence.
Compliance and Enforcement
Investigate and act upon statutory contraventions, including serving legal notices.
Prepare and present evidence in accordance with CPS Code, PACE, and relevant regulations.
Interpret and apply legislation and guidance accurately.
Expert Advice and Complex Case Management
Lead on complex or contentious cases, including emergency interventions.
Provide expert support and guidance to colleagues.
Recommend policy development and draft procedures as needed.
Complaints and Communication
Handle complaints and correspondence in your area of responsibility.
Prepare reports for senior managers and attend committees or working groups.
Stakeholder Engagement
Offer professional advice to councillors, MPs, the public, and partner agencies.
Participate in joint initiatives and collaborative projects.
Training and Development
Support training initiatives for staff, students, and external organisations.
Deliver lectures and demonstrations as part of training programmes.
Policy, Research, and Promotion
Identify opportunities for education and promotional initiatives.
Contribute to research and policy implementation.
Project Work and Representation
Undertake special projects or assignments as required.
Represent the service at external meetings, hearings, and legal proceedings.
Planning and Technical Review
Review and provide feedback on planning applications and external schemes.
Approve and negotiate contract specifications as needed.
Recruitment and HR Involvement
Participate in recruitment panels and industrial relations activities.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Stay up to date with changes in legislation and best practice.
Undertake relevant training and maintain professional competence.
Technology and Compliance
Utilise computer-based systems relevant to your duties.
Adhere to health and safety regulations, data protection laws, and Council policies.
Key Requirements
Degree or diploma in Environmental Health (or equivalent).
EHRB registration (or CIEH registration if applicable).
Extensive post-qualification experience in environmental health practice.
Proven ability to manage staff and complex casework.
Strong understanding of legislation and enforcement procedures.
Excellent communication, decision-making, and organisational skills.
