Job description
Overview

Senior Environmental Health Officer - Residential - London. Our client is looking for an accomplished Environmental Health Professional with private housing experience to start work as soon as possible.

Responsibilities
  • Provide the full range of duties appropriate to the Section as required, including management of work programmes and supervision of Lead Officers, Environmental Health Officers and Technical Officers or Assistants.
  • Manage staff by allocating work, setting priorities and monitoring performance to meet legislative, codes of practice, statutory guidance and Council policies.
  • Deputise for the Team Manager as required and take decisions on enforcement actions where contraventions of statutory requirements occur, including service of notices.
  • Interpret and apply relevant legislation with due regard to Codes of Practice and guidance; recommend enforcement action and prepare evidence in line with CPS Code of Practice, PACE and other relevant legislation.
  • Act as a source of expertise within the Section on complex or contentious matters, provide direction and support to the team on such cases, including emergency actions where necessary.
  • Prepare reports for the Team Manager and Head of Service; attend meetings of Committees and working parties as required.
  • Provide professional advice to Council Members, other services, statutory authorities and the public on Environmental Health issues and policy/procedures.
  • Participate in training and education activities, including lecturing, demonstrations and training for Student Environmental Health Officers and other staff as required.
  • Identify areas suitable for research and contribute to the development of policies and programmes; arrange lectures and demonstrations as required.
  • Undertake ad hoc environmental health assignments and represent the Service at meetings; provide evidence in legal proceedings and public inquiries when needed.
  • Scrutinise and comment on statutory applications, planning applications and external schemes as directed; approve specifications and tender documents for small works contracts and negotiate with consultants and contractors.
  • Participate in staff recruitment and industrial relations panels as required; keep up to date with legislation, technical information and CPD requirements.
  • Utilise computer based systems and perform duties with due regard to health and safety, data protection, equal opportunities and customer care policies.
