Job description

Sopra Steria has become a leader in climate & environmental sustainability in its sector. For eight years running, the achievements of our best-in-class climate & environmental sustainability practices in managing emissions from our value chain (direct operations, clients and supply chain), have earned us a place in the CDP Climate A list. This has placed us amongst the top 2% (515 of the 22,700) of companies benchmarked worldwide.

Momentum is gathering in both public and private sector organisations as requirements to address climate change, the single biggest long-term threat facing humanity, are increasing and becoming more complex. To play our part in fighting climate change, we have committed to achieve net zero targets by 2040, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Digital technology contributes approximately 4% of global emissions today, expected to grow to 14% by 2040. Sopra Steria is a proud member of the UK Government Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA), collaborating with the tech sector, UK government departments, and universities to develop ideas and solutions for less environmentally impactful digital services.

The Senior Environmental Consultant, based in the UK, will report to the UK Head of Climate and Environmental Sustainability. The role involves engaging with internal teams, clients, and suppliers to implement our UK Climate & Environmental Sustainability Strategy, measure environmental impacts, and support clients in reducing their environmental footprint. The role requires a proven track record in environmental reporting, stakeholder influence, and cross-team collaboration. It offers a hybrid working model, ideally in Manchester or Leeds, with travel to London and Manchester as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare annual GHG emissions data (Scope 1, 2, and 3) for disclosures and reports (e.g., SECR, ESOS, PPN 006).
  • Support development and monitoring of environmental plans to meet corporate targets.
  • Maintain data accuracy in the ESG Dashboard and produce KPI reports.
  • Ensure verifiable environmental disclosures and claims with proper evidence.
  • Analyze environmental metrics for performance trends and improvements.
  • Perform quantitative analysis to support climate risk management.
  • Contribute to bid responses with environmental expertise.
  • Advise client teams on reducing environmental impacts during contract delivery.
  • Calculate and report contract-level GHG emissions aligned with UK government standards.
  • Develop environmental scorecards and reports for clients.
  • Establish methodologies for measuring impacts of digital technologies, including AI, and promote digital sustainability best practices.
Candidate Profile:
  • Membership of ISEP (formerly IEMA).
  • Experience in calculating Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, especially Purchased Goods & Services.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental impacts of IT and digital tech, with eagerness to expand expertise.
  • Experience in assessing impacts like data centre PUE.
  • Deep technical knowledge on Climate Change, Net Zero, Science Based Targets, and related topics.
  • Knowledge of UK Government schemes like PPN 006 & 016, and standards such as Greening Government.
  • Proven ability to work in complex, demanding environments and deliver against deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
Preferred Skills:
  • Masters in environment or sustainability-related field.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and Power BI.
  • Experience completing the CDP Climate Change questionnaire.
  • Knowledge of EU Taxonomy and Data Centre Code of Conduct.
