Job Description
RPS is seeking a Senior Environmental Consultant to join our Environment & Infrastructure Team. This role can be based at various locations across the UK on a permanent, full-time, or part-time basis. The primary responsibility is to support environmental compliance and consent applications for infrastructure projects, including renewables. RPS is a global multidisciplinary consultancy specializing in the built and natural environment, shaping future environmental, social, and economic landscapes.
Your role
This key position involves integrating environmental aspects of consents into project delivery, spanning design, assessment, and construction. Responsibilities include:
- Managing and delivering multiple multidisciplinary consent applications
- Collaborating with clients and design teams to identify and manage necessary environmental consents
- Advising clients on environmental risks during pre-consenting, design, and construction phases
- Negotiating with stakeholders, regulators, and clients to identify required consents and assessments
- Scheduling activities and managing environmental site teams
- Leading technical meetings with planning, design, and environmental teams, stakeholders, and clients
- Preparing high-quality submission documents for authorities
- Planning the integration of consent conditions into project design and methodology
- Communicating consent requirements to site teams and clients
- Auditing compliance with consent conditions
Your skills and experience
- Relevant degree or MSc in environment; chartered status (CEnv, MIEMA, MCIWEM, CSci) preferred
- Experience in planning and delivering environmental aspects to meet planning requirements
- Experience in design and build stages of projects, either as part of a contractor’s design team or for clients
- Proven delivery of consent programs on major UK infrastructure projects
- Experience with multidisciplinary consent activities across water, biodiversity, cultural heritage, and contaminated land remediation
- Knowledge of hybrid Bill, DCO, TWA, and TCPA planning regimes
- Experience with environmental impact assessments
- Understanding of consenting issues and risk management in design processes
- Strong communication skills to work with diverse clients and teams; experience across sectors like rail, highways, energy, water is desirable
- Familiarity with NEC3/4 contracts is advantageous but not essential
