Silverstone UTC is seeking a Senior Engineering Workshop Technician to support the engineering team and maintain workshop equipment, safety standards and stock control.

The role involves supervising students working with engineering equipment (mills and lathes), developing lesson support with teachers, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations within the workshop.

Qualifications

  • Must hold an engineering qualification.
  • Previous technician experience.
  • Experience of working in an engineering environment.
  • Experience of managing and organising resources.
  • A good knowledge of relevant Health and Safety requirements.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Equality and Diversity.
  • Understanding of Child and Vulnerable Adult protection (Safeguarding Agenda).
  • Previous experience working in an educational environment (desirable)

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of workshop apparatus, equipment and materials as required.

  • Check equipment is in good working order; perform light repairs.
  • Assist with supervision of students using mills and lathes.

  • Manage equipment stock, storage and stationery; assist ordering.
  • Organise stock taking with risk assessments and disposal as required.

  • Upkeep of test rigs and handling of high value components.
  • Attend relevant courses on technicians' work and health and safety matters.

OVERALLPURPOSE OF JOB

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Workshop Technician to support our engineering team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Preparation of workshop apparatus/equipmentand materials as required, advising and assisting in the preparation and trialling ofpracticals and examinations and to keep confidentiality where necessary.
  • To collect and replace equipment and materialsafter use and clean when necessary.
  • Tocheck and maintain equipment is in good working order and, where possible, light repair of apparatus.
  • To assist with supervision of students whileworking with the engineering equipment, including mills and lathes.
  • To work with the teachers to developlessons, work plans and the classroom environment.
  • To support student achievement by providingconstructive feedback to students on their work measured against the learningoutcomes.
  • To be proactive in managing behaviour,promoting self-control, independence and integration of the students.
  • Toassist with the ordering & storage of equipment, stock and stationery.
  • Organising the stock taking of all equipment,with relevant risk assessments, and using storage and disposal arrangements asrequired.
  • Safe disposal of restricted waste materials.
  • Tocheck and update the department’s inventory, on an annual basis.
  • Toundertake routine safety checks as prescribed and maintain a safe environment.
  • Tobe responsible for the operation and up-keep of test rigs and associatedequipment as well as handling of high value components.
  • Responsibility for Health and Safety withinengineering department, writing risk assessments and operating procedures forexperiments, tests and demonstrations, informing staff about potential riskswhen necessary. Ensuring Health and Safety records are accurately maintainedand up to date.
  • Conduct training on testing equipment andoverseeing the operation of it.
  • To attend relevant courses concerning thework of technicians and to keep up to date on Health and Safety matters.
  • To act as a First Aider for the area.

Probationary period

The postholder should be able to do the jobcompetently after 6 months

Education and Qualifications:

Must hold an engineering qualification.

Experience and knowledge:

Previous technician experience.

Experience of working in an engineeringenvironment.

Experience of managing and organisingresources.

A good knowledge of relevant Health andSafety requirements.

Demonstrable knowledge of Equality andDiversity.

Understanding of Child and Vulnerable Adultprotection (Safeguarding Agenda) and the willingness to increase knowledge.

Previous experience working in aneducational environment (desirable)
