Job summary

Silverstone UTC in Towcester is seeking a Senior Engineering Workshop Technician to support our engineering team with maintenance and machining responsibilities. You will lead the technician team, oversee the operation and development of workshop facilities, and support students across all engineering disciplines through practical learning activities.

The post requires an engineering qualification and hands-on milling, turning and CNC experience, plus strong health and safety knowledge.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Prepare workshop apparatus/equipment and materials; assist in practicals and examinations.
  • Collect and replace equipment after use; clean as needed.
  • Check and maintain equipment; light repairs where possible.
  • Assist with supervision of students while working with engineering equipment (mills and lathes).
  • Work with teachers to develop lessons, work plans and classrooms environment.
  • Support student achievement by providing constructive feedback against learning outcomes.
  • Be proactive in managing behaviour and promoting independence and integration of students.
  • Assist with ordering & storage of equipment, stock and stationery; organise stock takes with risk assessments.
  • Undertake routine safety checks and maintain a safe environment.
  • Be responsible for operation and upkeep of test rigs and associated equipment; handle high value components.
  • Write risk assessments and operating procedures; maintain Health and Safety records.

Senior Engineering Workshop Technician (Maintenance & Machining)

What skills and experience we're looking for

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Workshop Technician to support our engineering team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Preparation of workshop apparatus/equipment and materials as required, advising and assisting in the preparation and trialling of practicals and examinations and to keep confidentiality where necessary.
  • To collect and replace equipment and materials after use and clean when necessary.
  • To check and maintain equipment is in good working order and, where possible, light repair of apparatus.
  • To assist with supervision of students while working with the engineering equipment, including mills and lathes.
  • To work with the teachers to develop lessons, work plans and the classroom environment.
  • To support student achievement by providing constructive feedback to students on their work measured against the learning outcomes.
  • To be proactive in managing behaviour, promoting self-control, independence and integration of the students.
  • To assist with the ordering & storage of equipment, stock and stationery.
  • Organising the stock taking of all equipment, with relevant risk assessments, and using storage and disposal arrangements as required.
  • Safe disposal of restricted waste materials.
  • To check and update the department's inventory, on an annual basis.
  • To undertake routine safety checks as prescribed and maintain a safe environment.
  • To be responsible for the operation and up-keep of test rigs and associated equipment as well as handling of high value components.
  • Responsibility for Health and Safety within engineering department, writing risk assessments and operating procedures for experiments, tests and demonstrations, informing staff about potential risks when necessary. Ensuring Health and Safety records are accurately maintained and up to date.
  • Conduct training on testing equipment and overseeing the operation of it.
  • To attend relevant courses concerning the work of technicians and to keep up to date on Health and Safety matters.
  • To act as a First Aider for the area.

Probationary period

The postholder should be able to do the job competently after 6 months

Education and Qualifications:

Must hold an engineering qualification.

Experience and knowledge:

Experience of working in an engineering environment.

As the Haas project develops and the UTC expands its engineering provision, there will be opportunities for the successful candidate to further develop their own role within a growing and ambitious engineering team.
