The City of Birmingham is seeking to hire an experienced Senior Engineering Inspector. This role plays a critical role in the review and oversight of public infrastructure projects. This professional will be responsible for examining construction plans to ensure readiness for field inspections related to construction and maintenance activities involving roads, bridges, sewer lines, and other public infrastructure systems. In this role, Senior Engineering Inspectors manage and direct the inspection of infrastructure projects—including drainage systems, sanitary sewers, roadways, subdivisions, and utilities in accordance with established civil engineering principles as well as federal, state, and local engineering codes, standards, and regulations. A key responsibility of this position includes the supervision of Engineering Inspectors. Senior Inspectors assign inspection tasks, provide professional mentorship, and ensure that inspection activities adhere to technical standards and procedural guidelines. They are also the primary point of contact for resolving issues and addressing concerns raised by contractors, public officials, and members of the community, providing informed solutions when possible.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver's license.
Extensive experience involving civil engineering inspection on public infrastructure projects including but not limited to areas such as inspecting sewer lines, streets, bridges, utility installation, performing field tests on construction materials or surveying.
Experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications, maps for public infrastructure projects.
Experience calculating quantities of construction materials in the field, and preparing estimates for construction projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by Birmingham when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Certification(s) related to engineering inspections specific to public infrastructure projects (e.g., American Concrete Institute, Roadway Technician, ALDOT certifications, ADEM licenses/certifications, Pipe Assessment).
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Communicates with various entities (e.g., the public, other departments, contractors) by informing project engineers and contractors, providing information to attorneys, and speaking with individuals involved with concerns in order to inform them of the nature of construction projects and existing utility issues.
Oversees contractors’ work on public infrastructure projects (e.g., subdivisions, sewer lines, bridges, roads) by monitoring the progress of work, approving payment to contractors and ensuring the appropriate quality and quantity of materials (e.g., steel, concrete, asphalt, soil) are used or removed in order to ensure projects are completed according to specifications.
Oversees and participates in the Inspection of construction and maintenance work on public infrastructure by inspecting drainage structures, sanitary sewers, wastewater treatment plants, roads, bridges, subdivisions, and utilities using accepted civil engineering practices, national, state, and local engineering codes, standards, or regulations to ensure that projects are completed according to job specifications.
Examines and reviews plans of assigned projects by attending pre-construction meetings, examining utilities at construction sites, and reading maps and drawings in order to prepare for on-site inspections during construction and maintenance projects on public infrastructure (e.g., roads, bridges, sewer lines).
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as roadways, water treatment facilities, and construction sites. Work also involves the use of a variety of equipment related to inspecting construction sites including, but not limited to, computer, calculator, measuring devices, levels, etc. Job may require exposure to potentially hazardous work conditions (e.g., working in and around traffic, construction zones, heavy equipment). Job may also require exposure to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.).EEO STATEMENT:
